  1. Ettin Etiquette

The last time you saw these Ettin creatures, they were slower and weaker. These two- headed monsters from the Hexen universe are now in Hell, and would you believe it... you're out of ammo! You may as well dump your weapons 'cause you won't find any ammo here; the Ettin have never been known to use anything other than a spiked mace. You'd better find yourself a Mace of Retribution (a.k.a. Power Mace) quickly, or the locals in this corner of Hell are going to give you a lesson in the finer points of... Well I started off inspired by the 10sector.wad, but alas I ended up with about 80. Its a nicely detailed, mid-sized level that took almost a week to compose. You'll have to make good use of the pistol and chainsaw to get through with any life, I made ammo really tight.

  7. Forest Base

In one of the few remaining forests of earth, the UAC has been testing a new type of interdimensional teleportel. Deemed "fail safe," these new models are equipped with spawn seeking BFGs. Of course, to test the BFGs, monster test subject were needed. So, under close supervision, the monsters were kept in individual cages at the base. One day, taking an imp back to a cage, the marine turned around to close the cage up. That split-second cost him his life and soon, most of the monsters were roaming the base.

The few survivors who were able to get to a teleportal knew something had to be done or else the hellspawn would figure out how to disable the security system from inside the base and possibly bring forth another Spawn of Hell even worse then before. This cannot be allowed to happen. So, of course, you're the only man for the job. Dropped off in a courtyard where you were given the location of a tunnel into the base, you entered it and found yourself trapped in the base. The UAC cannot risk sending someone else to get you so the only way out is to clean out the base and get to the teleportal. Already you have been told of some terrifying monsters deep inside the complex, but you just shrug, you've seen worse...

Lost in a desert somewhere on a recently colonized planet, you're about to die from thurst. You stumble under the cruel sunlight. Suddenly, in a small depression, you find the entrance to a mining station. Most of the inhabitants seem to have left in a hurry. Some of them even seem to have gone mad with fear and shoot everything in sight. Visiting the derelict buildings you wonder what could possibly have frightened them. Actually after a few moments, you wish you never found out.

  12. Decimate

A search & rescue effort is underway in the mountains of Central Europe for a group of missing hikers. You were assigned the route leading through the infamous Carpathian Gap, which few have explored and fewer yet have returned from. Hitching up your holstered side- arm you trudge wearily up the deserted mountain path.

The long shadows of evening begin to descend on the slopes around you when you come upon a tunnel in the rock. Stumbling ahead in pitch darkness, your heart pounding, you wish you weren't such a lazy shit- head and neglected to pack a damn flashlight or a flare. But then an opening in the tunnel appears, and you glimpse a massive hollow in the rock that appears to have been carved out. A medieval and well- fortified structure looms ahead, flanked by two evil-looking towers. You step tentatively forward but suddenly hear the creak of rusted metal bars as they ominously drop shut behind you. "Crap!" you think as you reach for your 9mm. "It's going to be one of those days!"

Some things to consider: Trigger happy = Dumb, very dumb Don't shoot anything until you have to, or you're well-stocked Why waste a good bullet when you can use a beserk pak instead?

The architecture is quite detailed, and the texture alignment is near perfect (can you say "huge pain in the ass and a major buttload of work"?)

  13. Fear Island

You begin on the marbled rooftop of an island fortress. Work your way down two terraced levels, battling all your favorite foes. Note: although the chainsaw & berserk pack are sources of limitless entertainment, they usually serve a dual purpose, (i.e., they allow you to conserve ammo). Remember this. Although the architecture is not terribly detailed, the texture alignment is near perfect.

  15. Jägermörder - 01 Chemical Lab

I guess I gotta write a story.. argh.. Basicly the hellspawn have invaded earth again, this time in the Colorado Rockies (not a fan of the team ;)... the military sent you alone because they cannot afford any more casulties after the previous wars with hell... you're resumé also helps you get the job. :) A few days back the UAC base radioed in that the computers were acting weird, such as programs closing down for no reason... the UAC hq just dismissed this since Microsoft was the dominant maker of most of these programs... the scientists and soldiers at the base were never heard from again and satelite scans reveiled the enemy (Yes, in this story the scanners actually pick them up!) Inside the base there's teleporting technology which must be how the minions of hell got back on earth.. you must find this teleporter and use it to transport to the source... Hrm.. wasn't too bad for my first storyline :P

  19. Earth

Ten level episode for the game engine, ZDOOM. This episode fully accomodates ZDoom's enhancements of free-look, jumping and the Boom/ZDoom enhanced set of line specials. It also has areas of complexity and grandeur of archetecture and settings not previously possible under DoomII. EarthZD also has a custom sky specifically designed for ZDoom. It is based upon the Earth.wad episode for DoomII by the same author.

Story Line You arrive home in Earth's planetary system exhausted from enduring vicious combat that started on Phobos and led to the Gates of Hell. You are on your way to sun, surf, and fishing for a spell of well earned vacation. However, upon arrival in low Earth orbit, you learn the terrible truth--Earth is not free. You study your options and decide to insert upon a remote and rocky coastline. Levels: The Ruins (MAP01): You stand at your point of arrival, facing out to sea with rolling breakers splasing on the rocks. This looks like it should have been your vacation site. But behind you are the ruins of civilization, haunted with alien hellspawn... The Tomb (MAP02): To have hope of freeing the world, you must take back the one place the enemy considers special. It is located under the great pyramid... Mines of Moria (MAP03): Like its Lord of the Rings namesake, it is crawling with evil things... The Chasm (MAP04): The enemy is bivouacked in rugged coastal terrain. You mission is to clear them out... Strategic Defense Command (MAP05): A deep underground command and control center, one of the last great hopes for mankind in repelling the alien invasion. However, it seems to be off line, You need to find out why... Observation Station (MAP06): This place has seen some action before it fell to the enemy. Beware!... The Emerald Tower (MAP07): The Enemy has established a command post in a giant ornate emerald green tower. Your mission is to disrupt their communications by taking it back... Ammo Pit (MAP08): This is the domain of the arch-vile. Trick him into helping you... Islands (MAP09): You arrive on an rocky island in a rugged fjord. Out to sea and somewhat up the coast is another, larger island that you must somehow reach... The Hill (MAP10): You must capture a heavily defended fortress on a hill...

Combat These levels contain a wide variety of combat situations requiring different strategies. To win these levels, especially at the more difficult skill settings, requires thinking in terms of fields of fire, planning your cover, looking out for your flanks and backside, and keeping open your lines of retreat. Most of the monster placement is randomized so that their location and response are different each time these levels are played. Hence, you will be unable to count on finding specific monsters at specific locations. (And there will not be many opportunities for blasting monsters in their sleep.) The monsters occasionally show sneaky behavior due to features in the level designs. Setting: This episode is set on a rocky coastline. with spectacular outdoor views. These include high vistas and overlooks, live surf crashing onto the rocks, scenic elevator rides on the outside of tall buildings, spectacular bridges and a spectacular hilltop fortress new to EarthZD. General: Secrets generally have some clue that the thoughtful and observant player can spot. These levels are designed to be winnable at the easier skill settings without finding the secrets, but to win the more difficult settings requires locating most of the secrets. There are no totally hidden hazards or traps; there will always be some visual or audio cue to warn of there presence. Some of the pools and slime pits have depth, ie, you will sink into them, sometimes up to your eyeballs. Remember, though, this is ZDoom with free-look and jumping that plays more like Quake than the original Doom. Objects like trees, barrels, etc., are not infinitely tall and the player can jump up onto objects as tall as 56 units; this will be an important factor in navigating some places and finding some secrets. One final note; cliff edges at most of the high vistas are lethal to fall off of (one cannot expect to survive a fall of several hundred feet in real life).

  22. Dismemberment

I'm pretty sure this is bigger then Eulogy 8. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. Anyway, this one can't be completed in five mins(100/100 anyway), unlike Eulogy 9, since that was the main complaint about it(too short). It's also harder then I usually make maps(I think so anyway, but what do I know, I suck at Doom heh).

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b
