  4. Dorks 'R Us: Graphics and Sound WAD, full version

This version of this graphics and sound WAD will replace eight musics, 28 sounds, 1 weapon, 4 bad guys, and some other stuff. Every change I've made is something totally demented and silly. (See complete list below)

  5. Ichor: Blood of the Gods - Carnage Galore II

You thought carnage.wad was hard, well this new one makes it look easy. Not only is it much harder, but it is HUGE. It is nine levels covering the entire Dome of D'Sparil episode. You will be able to finish the level without having to find any secrets, although some areas will seem like they are. To kill all the enemies (especially the Chaos Serpents), you will have to find all, if not most, of the secrets.

  6. White Plume Mountain II (HWHITE2.ZIP)

This is a HERETIC version of TSR's Dungeons & Dragons module: White Plume Mountain recreated by Stephen Woods. To call this a SuperDungeon is no understatement. (I've refereed the module no less than five times! It still gets requested by rpg gamers to this day and blows 'em away every time.) TSR produced about a dozen classic adventures in the late 70's and early 80's and White Plume Mountain was one of the best of the bunch. While other role playing games were striving for more and more realism (most gamers really don't like gobs and gobs of rules), TSR, the creators of Dungeons & Dragons, did just the opposite. Sticking to a simple system (with gobs and gobs of supplements) and a small group of designers/writers/artists, a style emerged that remains a standard for fantasy games, even today. (The Telengard-Wizardry Factor) They gave the adventure-hungry gamers exactly what they wanted: interactive entertainment that was CHEAP, PORTABLE and, above all, PLAYABLE.

    But I digress...

White Plume Mountain was very famous for two or three of its rooms and extremely famous for three of its weapons: "Wave" was a magic trident of some reknown. "Whelm" was a great hammer of which many unbelieveable stories are told. "Blackrazor" was, perhaps, the most infamous of the three, being a great two handed sword of the damnable kind that drinks souls.

In this version there are some considerable differences from the original adventure but most of the features are included thanks to Steve's immaculate drafting skills. I merely added a few HERETIC essentials and some spooky areas for those D&D buffs to explore.

  11. GULAG

A five-level wad for Heretic, incorporating numerous new graphics. The appearance of each level is quite different; there is no unifying theme except that the action takes place on a series of islands. If I could have figured out how to replace the end screens, (assuming it's possible with Heretic), I would have named the levels:

    1) On the Beach 2) Subterranea 3) Skull Mountain 4) The Flying Dutchman 5) Circus Maximus

Three of the levels are quite large (Circus Maximus is over 700K); I have been told that Gulag plays "too choppy" on a 486, so the wad may require a Pentium, or similar processor, for smooth gameplay.

  14. Graves & Caves

This is a straightforward single- player level for Heretic, with some nice special effects: A graveyard with coffins glowing through the earth, open cemetary gates, flooded caves, holes blown through walls, waterfalls, volcanoes, pieces of the ceiling falling into the path of water so it has to flow around it, tables and chairs, etc. There are a few secrets.

  24. Wyvern Heights

This well designed level has quite a few areas to discover, it takes me (the author) about 18 minutes to complete the entire level with 100% kills and all secrets found in skill 4 mode.

Please note that you must be alert in locatating certain switches and doors that might not look like the ones you're used to - this is by design for reasons of creativity. Different, but well done.

The texture alignment is outstanding (nice wall switches) and to top it off, there are a ton of new graphics contained in this file...

Don't be surprised if you discover some familiar bitmaps along the way...There are some textures in this file from "Rise of the Triad" by Apogee Software, as well as Doom 1 and 2 from id Software. I thought it would be wonderful to see all my favorite textures in one level...well, here it is and I'm sure you'll agree that they all look great together.

I would recommend at least a 486DX2/66 with 8 Megs of RAM to enjoy the level fully. This is the system I used to write Wyvern Heights - it runs great on my computer, no slowing down (thanks again RMB!). I wish every author would use it...

Oh, one more thing...Please, no codes! There is ample ammo and if you're semi-experienced at Heretic then it will be a good WAD for you to practice your combat stategies...just don't cheat.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
