Level editors assist you in the construction of an entirely new level after you've gotten tired of playing the original ones. It is suggested you try them all out and use the one that you find most comfortable to use. Check the filedate to see if your editor is up to date and supports doom2, heretic or hexen. Also try docs/editing for further support. If in doubt please send mail to idgmaint AT gamers.org with 'DOOM-FTP' in the subject line. However, we cannot help you with editing related problems.

  1. Heretic extras for DoomEd

This is a replacement for the file things.def for DoomEd version 3,0 alpha 8, and probably DoomEd version 2,60 beta 4 too, but I don't use that so I don't really know.

Why would you want a replacement of things.def? Because this replacement lets you use the sprites from Heretic with DoomEd, presuming you have bought and paid for it that is (it works with the beta and shareware versions as well). To use it just copy it into your DoomEd directory and be sure to change DOOM.WAD to HERETIC(1).WAD so that you can use all the new textures for Heretic.

There are probably a lot of things which I have missed, so be sure to mail me if you find out what any of the other numbers are. Since I have found no bodys or pools of blood there really have to be more things!

  3. HFDE/h : Hack of A Famous Doom Editor - HERETIC edition

HFDE/h is a full featured PWAD editor for id Software's HERETIC based on DEU 5.1-5.2 by Ralphael Quinet and Brendon J. Wyber. Basicly I took DEU 5.2, and hacked it; giving it a brand new interface, some new features, and of course support of heretic.

Since DEU is the most powerfull editor available, I picked it to work with. Originally HFDE (the DOOM registered version) was designed for my own use, hence the interface is how I like it.

  5. ADE II for Doom II

100% legal and official version of DEU for Doom II - features total Doom II support (new linedefs, textures, flats, sectors etc.), Doom I-to-Doom II PWAD conversion (converts textures too!), and neat new enhancements to DEU 5.21, such as textual level display.

Very cool. It's legal because I've got a DUL from ID, and Raphael has agreed with me that I can release it.

  10. Wads_Up - A Doom Level Editor

    Why Wads_Up?
Simple to use. You shouldn't need to know all the intricacies of the WAD file to use it.
Very quick at building up the basic structure of your level. You want to build a 12 walled room? Just type in 12, click on the map in two places and you have a 12 walled room. Move the corners of the room to desired position with the mouse. Want a corridor off this room? Create a 4 walled room. Merge one of the walls with one of the walls of the original room. Move the rest of the corridor to the desired position. It's done. Everything is defaulted and you can run it from there. No fiddling with sidedefs, sectors, linedefs, vertexes. It should all be done by the program. Change heights, textures, light levels, etc.
Runs under Windows. Allows you to multi-task with DOOM itself, editing and playing levels without all the tedious booting up of DOOM. On v1.2 this only works if you don't a) Add/Delete Objects or monsters, and b) change the structure of the rooms. In v1.3 of DOOM, ID are catering for this functionality so you should be able to do this fully.
Doesn't touch your DOOM.WAD file. (Unless you tell it to!)
Can reference Multi-Wads for GFX, levels, etc.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
