About This File

Castle of Evil. (previously released in beta form as ss27bet2.wad)

First of all let me say... This is bloody *HUGE* 8) I've been working on this for a long time since most of the earlier editors couldn't handle a large level like this one.

Made for sp, coop or dm (I aim to please.)

It's pretty open with only a few doors requiring keycards. Other doors may require a switch. There are peep holes and ambush spots almost everywhere for happy deathmatch. But open spaces are also provided for those all out battles.

Most heavy firepower is heavily guarded by monsters or hidden. The only easy weapon to get in single player mode is the shotgun. All the weapons are present.

This level is mostly hack, slash, ambush + puzzle type.

For more information consult the other .txt files in this archive.

There now go kill something... Send me some hate mail.

I find it fascinating. I definitely disagree with whoever called this "ugly", it's 1994 so I can forgive, for example, rendering erros in outside areas (disappearing walls when seen from a specific angle). The main theme is marble/castle, with a few base bits to break the monotony and it has quite a few very interesting design bits, such as placing an outside soulsphere on a shrine of sorts. All the rooms are easily recognizable. The highlight is the switch hunt and wow, he really put more rewarding items in more complicated secrets, while simple stuff such as shells or medikits in easy to find (or stumble upon) closets (however, I think both plasma guns are better hidden than the BFG IMO). So yes, item placement is good, the atmosphere is good, the map offers much more than being just big, I wouldn't be surprised if I heard that it inspired some NEIS bits, as I could feel this vibe also :)

An impressively large and labyrinthine map, even by 2018 standards. It was enjoyable for the most part, with reasonable health and ammo balance, and interesting to explore. My one big complaint is the teleporters - the map would have already been difficult enough to navigate without apparently patternless teleporters all throughout the map!

Huge. Took me SUCKS to finish. A bit ugly, but at the same time so felicitious and beautiful. The BEST 1994 WAD, no doubt about that.

One of the best early levels focusing on exploration. Slightly ugly by today's standards yet extremely atmospheric and well worth playing for the non-linear adventure that follows. Highly recommended.

OMG In those 1994 days I've played about 3500-4000 levels, and SS27BET2, a remake of E1M4, belonged to my top favourites. Sadly it had an awful lot of bugs, and looked unfinished. Two decades later I found this final version... and was unexpectedly much pleasantly surprised with the polished gameplay and the extensions. Overall, rated as a 1994 map: solid 5* - legendary, and an absolute MUST-play. IOW: top stuff.

This is dated October 1994. It's an extraordinary achievement for the period - 508 baddies in an enormous castle that seems to go on forever, with a nicely varied set of environments. It's large even by 2010 standards and must have sorely tested the 486 DX2s of 1994. The gameplay is understandably wandery although I enjoy that kind of thing; but it's mind-boggling that this came out in 1994. Heartbreakingly the author seems to have given up after this.

Very large and a bit aimless, although it's a pleasant enough wander around (it's very impressive for 1994, though). For some reason there's a mini-homage to the first bit of E1M4, which was odd to stumble upon. Too big and unfocused to work really well (it's more like the setting for a MMORPG), but it's decent.

Huge, ugly, but AWESOME level from 1994. Seriously, it took me nearly an hour to complete this. But man, you NEED to play this pwad. It's the best underrated wad of 1994. 4/5

This level is HUGE. Lots of exploring. Not very good looking technically, there's misalignments and such, but that's to be expected from a level this old. However the ugliness is somewhat balanced with some quite nice large scale scenes, and interesting designs. Did I say this level is huge? - Espi

I was addicted to this for years. It may look old-fashioned. The overall game play mnakes up for it.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
