About This File

You need a registered version of Ultimate DooM to play this. 2.2 Mb when unzipped.

This is a full, nine map DooM 1 episode incorporating the 5 previously released 'Spooky' maps plus 4 spanking brand new, neverseenbefore ones. If you've already played the spookies, then sorry but I have decided to release this wad purely for my own benefit. I wanted to sign off from DooM with some kind of accomplishment i.e. a complete episode for Doom 1....and this is it!!

The new maps are e4m1, e4m7, e4m8 & e4m9 in case you don't want to play the spookies again. Each map is designed to be played from scratch.

This wad will run with v1.9 and is not exclusive to any port.

+++ SPECIAL NOTE FOR ZDOOM USERS +++ You must use the extension "-noflathack" in the command line, otherwise this wad will crash.

Amazing! For me, easily the best episode for doom 1, wheater it's for gameplay (which is tough), or the superb dark atmosferic, detailed architecture, it just beats the crap out of all episode 4 replacements i've played (including death tormention series), and yes, i prefer it to the authors "slayer" episode, although that one is awesome aswell. And quality doom1 replacements are something of a rarity, so if you're into doom 1, you can't go wrong here. 5/5 -TeH NeXuS

This was one of the best episode replacements I've played, and every level is a good progression from the last, providing fair but tough challenge that rises with each level. The atmosphere is exceptionally "spooky," making perfect use of custom textures and stock Doom stuff.

May possibly be the best map I have ever played. A mixture of Doom, and evil. 5/5 -r_rr

Talented mapper Wiles (Slayer, Darkening 2) serves up a disjointed, uneven set of castle/base maps. Some maps are very good (e.g. E4M7 and E4M8) whereas the gameplay in others is lacklustre, and sometimes even annoying (including a strange infatuation with lost souls). The improper new sounds should have been left out. Nothing to complain about in the aesthetics department. Overall, a solid piece of work which is pretty darn good. --4/5

"You need a registered version of Ultimate DooM to play this." aww fuck, i've got the shareware version. how can i play this shit? nonetheless, i still give this wad 4 stars for effort. can't wait to buy full version of doom 1 to play this and many wads as i own only doom 2.

I agree strongly with what everyone else has already said; this is a truely amazing episode . In terms of Doom I Episode 4 wads, this is IMO in a tied second place with DT2 and beaten only by DT3. There is really nothing wrong with this episode at all - it is so good that this could be a commercial episode and be quite popular - it sure beats all of the original Doom levels hands down. Difinantly not an episode to be missed.

It's hard to believe this wad is some 12 years old - it would be a great release even today. I think it's right with DT3 for best E4 replacements.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
