About This File

MAP01 for BooM or ZDooM ONLY (DooM II) Anything else and you're gonna be in deeper shit than a midget cleaning out a port-a-potty near the back of a bran muffin factory in Mexico.

Nice cathedral-type adventure map. Highly detailed with a lot of care, and great ambiance. Gameplay @ UV gets a bit boring due to too many low-tier monsters icw no SSG, then suddenly turns into heavy slaughter. This might have been build-up more gradually. And doors with side actions 1 & 31 (f.e. linedef 6372) are a no-go, because they're gameplay-killers equivalent to inescapable pits. But overall: not legendary, but solid 4*.

I'm surprised this map doesn't have more comments! The visuals are fantastic for a map made in '99. In fact, it looks great even by today's standards. There are some very clever ideas I haven't seen anywhere else. The game play is good as well, with plenty of action to go around. My only complaint is a few copy/paste sections, but that can be forgiven with the scope work presented, as well as the originality. This map should be viewed by every mapper, if not just for a few ideas!

Hardly a "hidden" gem - this is a well-known map from a few years back. Otherwise, what the guy above said. 4/5

I like to look up these unreviewed, unremarked levels from the past in case one of them is a hidden gem. This is quite good. The design is clean and well done, and there is an enormous amount of monsters and ammo; it's almost like a kind of hybrid conventional/slaught er map at times. It's great fun although very linear.

liked, except that it took 14 minutes and 180 monsters to kill with shotgun before I got the ssg. Also really surprised this isn't a Fiffy map, but the author does thank Fiffy in the txt file.

Wow... I never actually expected anyone to still try and find these maps. This is particularly cool for me personally, because this one, FizzB1, is my map :) It's the only one I ever actually released.. Thanks to everyone here who still plays these things. I'd almost completely forgotten about this. 3/21/10 -Dave

This is from September 1999. It's decent fun. You fight 665 monsters in a mid-sized gothic library-castle style map. Nice buttresses. It starts off very grid-like, then opens out a bit, although it's frequently copy-and-paste. The gameplay is a bit monotonous, and it's not hard if you play it methodically because there's a lot of health and ammo. If however you just dash around in circles it's very entertaining, with lots of infighting.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
