What? This is not good at all. It's basically a handful of short maps straight out of 1994 complete with cheesy MIDIs and zero difficulty. The maps are interconnected with a hub, which in execution means you go through the right door first to flip a switch, then go back through the left door and take an alternate exit to flip another switch. The unskippable cutscenes highlight exactly why Doom was better off eschewing a narrative in the first place. To top things off, it ends with a tedious platforming sequence while an overpowered boss fires a railgun at you. I just fail to see how this could've ever been regarded as a good WAD, especially when Kurt Kesler's maps came out around the same time and actually had gameplay, detailing, and lighting to back up the source port gimmicks.

Just plain awesome. It's got some nice humor there, too.

If I could meet the good Sam Ketner, I'd buy them a beer (or coffee, if they wish). This is the best wad I have ever played, seriously.

^and it happened to be the first zdoom hub too. If it weren't for this we wouldn't be seeing the cool new crap coming out now, besides I don't see how you can dis it, its actually pretty good for its time.

crappy level design. midi conversions of popular music really don't fit in here, and a ninja turtle computer?? the missions were pretty interesting though. *** -sargebaldy

I didn't mind the music except for the X-Files theme, which made me turn the volume off. Other than that, great wad, 5 stars.

This is really, really good! My only complain is the very long, unskippable cutscenes and the fact that second level looks a lot like Doom II's MAP07. :/

In terms of actual quality, it's probably 3 or 4 stars - it's enjoyable but it's nothing special, but how could you miss this?! It's the mother of all hub-based wads, the first one to exist. Without it, there'd be no Trust, no Hell Factory, no Daedalus, etc.! 3.5/5 for the wad itself, but 5/5 for its legend!

My complements for the pioneers work! Within that context, I consider the somewhat boring music as completely irrelevant. Legendary, so 5/5.

Mediocre level design and looks, but it actually plays decently. And it was a classic for being the first of a new generation.

I dont get how the hell this thing got 4 stars. The levels were boring and looked ugly. The new graphics were crappy and ugly too.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
