About This File

Something truly wicked this way comes... For use with TeamTNT's BOOM engine only. Employs GothicDM(2) texture resources... Several maps in ye ol' Gothic tradition.

To be fair, it's only Matt Dixon's levels that suck ass. The music, however, is utter shit. Despite that, the rest of the levels are neat.

Now in 2013 that I'm posting this , that everyone has computers good enough to run this, I'm sure it would be great. I love the design (never seen this wad before) and as a Heretic lover and a Doom hater I think it's a huge improvement over the original.

If you treat it as a DM WAD, it sucks. If you treat it as a WAD just to walk through and look at, it wins all the way. 5/5

Worthy of a look just to see the architecture, but would I actually DM on it? Uh, never.

A worthy entry in the competition for cramming the most linedefs/sidedefs/sectors into the smallest area possible (a fierce rival to King REol's/Fiffy's later works!) ;-P. This isn't Doom, it's an experiment. But -- it's good for benchmark testing of modified Doom engines, unless you want to use one of the Nuts! WAD:s. --3/5

LINEDEF ORGY! It's like the authors tried their absolute best to cram as much detail into these levels, everything else be damned. Still worth downloading to see these people's mad detail fetish for yourself. 3/5 --Woolie

Eight DM maps each with a consistent theme. Sadly all the themes suck: the levels are ugly textured and overdetailed. 1/5

Great design, and it runs smooth in GZDoom and GL/PRBoom. 5/5

I didn't played it in multiplayer, only walked about, but I understand complaints. It's like running inside the submarine, tight, dark and you can hit your head with some shit sticking from the wall. With one difference, architecture is much more interesting than typical submarine's. -- Brun Ohn

If Doom was a game all about detail, this would win first place. But doom isnt now is it. This is just some 'thing' i cant even put into words. In all areas besides detail, this wad fails. I mean, theres soo much detail, the whole thing is just ugly altoghether. Thus another example that gameplay wins over detail in all wads.1\5.

Awful, awful linedef orgies. Whoever voted more than a 0 on this needs to actually try to PLAY THE THING IN DEATHMATCH, and see how unplayable it becomes after it loads up.

It looks good but there is way too much detail (especially in the first 2 maps), too much that it spoils everything. 3 Stars -PC

Needs more detail!!11 This goddamn tragedy misinterpreted good taste in detail for a fuckload of linedefs that, that's right, just make those maps worse than they are! Should've been called Baroque. 0 stars. It's nice to look at them just to kill your fps.

2 stars, gameplay is not that good nor is the detailing. To much ugly fucking brown and black, gothic textures are ugly when not used in the correct way still it does offer a bit of fun for about 10 minutes.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
