About This File

After a hard nights driving about in the galaxy, your trusted space vessel "Margie" runs out of fuel and you crash on some ugly planet.

Uhm... thats it I think.

Oh yeah; You have to kill stuff too.

(If you depserately need a storyline, go play something else or think of one yourself.)

This is a superb set of levels that strongly resemble one of the Quake II mission packs. The textures and design are lovely, and the gameplay is finely balanced; it's often great fun to just run through the levels, stirring up the monsters, and wading into the ensuing carnage. It's especially impressive because it's apparently Doom2.exe compatible; as one of the reviewers above says, if this had come out in 1996 it would have blown people's socks off.

An exceptional follow up to a great wad. Like the first one, this has tons of details and you can see how influential it has been. Is it as good as the first one? I believe so yes. 5 stars. -TRRobin.

This megawad raised the bar on all projects in development. The levels are covered with architecture so incredible, you won't believe it's doom. You'll be drooling for more after playing through this.

Much bigger and more complicated maps than the first Darkening, not to mention a new texture scheme, but all the base qualities of its predecessor remain.

This awesome map pack is a more than worthy follow up to E1. With much bigger levels (many are huge), almost all new textures (FAR more than E1 had), and good, challenging gameplay, along with some good DM levels after the SP episode, this wad has just about everything going for it and is not one to miss!

I just love this levelset. The textures are
amazing as is the music, in the first released
version, second released fucked that up a bit
with replacing cool music with not so cool.
Levels are big and detailed with great gameplay
and... stuff.

A vastly superior sequel to The Darkening, which was already a fantastic wad. So you know you are in for something really spectacular with this one - I will stop right here so I don't spoil the fun!

WOW, DOOM 2 beats Quake 2 at its own game! Very balanced gameplay that just doesn't feel as repetitive as it seems. Some musics are great (eg MAP07 or MAP11), while, as others have said, a few others aren't so good (esp. MAP05 meltdown) But this wad still is Legendary for its immersive gameplay.

Oops i just planted a review intended for this wad on the Darken1 page... anyway, overly complex maps that tend to get you lost a lot, and without nearly enough monsters to make the journey even halfways interesting... ends up being a confusing, frustrating snoozefest. (played with brutal doom on Brutal difficulty). also didn't like the textures. Becomes very monotonous after a while... D1 was less polished but far more entertaining!

Darkening 2 is basically a set of base maps that served as a prototype for all the boring generic as fuck horse shit modern tech bases we see nowadays. Still though, it's not Ola or team's fault that the doom community is monkey see monkey do, so this still gets a 4, as it is fun in it's own right.

Ridiculously good. One of the best mapsets ever, hands down. Forget the new stuff, this holds up as well now as it ever did. Brilliant.

ellmo: DE2 is a damn masterpiece. An inspiration and example for all mappers, who are willing to build some tech-type *.wads. A must-have with more than 600 new textures/flats, all new music for 12 levels, plus 12 amazingly good DM maps. Challenging but not impossible. My "numero uno" among Doom2 add-ons. 11/10 !

Fine level designs with decent flow (the only flaw being that the action can be a bit slow or sparse occasionally), with an innovative texture set (the only flaw may be the dithered effect used to create unusual color tones, which looks better at medium or long distance). Wlies did the best combination of level flow/texturing. The music is also innovative but mostly doestn't fit the game or environment. [4/5] ~Chain Mail

Even more theme rigid than Darkening I. The design is good, the music is funny. There's tons of action. Try it now. 4/5. IC

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
