Playing this mod made me realise DOOM can still be frightening. Amazing title. One little question, though... What is the difference between this version and the other one available right here at the archives? Thanks!

This is a large, atmospheric, and very spartan level that works more as an atmospheric experience than a playable Doom map. It's very dark and the design is simple, but effectively creepy. The asylum is mostly empty, with lots of prison cells. a bit mazey. 100 monsters, spread over a large area. Almost no ammo and health, so you basically have to get it right first time. Excellent sound replacement. Doesn't quite feel like the classic it is heralded as, though.

Wow. You can definitely tell that this came from someone who certainly knew what they were doing. Undoubtably the best WAD I've seen so far, and it's the scariest level I've ever seen in Doom. It's certainly one that I will tell all my Doom player friends about. -- NegaZero

For me it's awful. Could be good for the advencture, but what is doom without fight??

I would have wanted to like this level. It is made with expectional standards. Very atmospheric with good visual design and lots of cool details. But it's darn hard. Maybe i'm just a newb, but temptation to cheat became overhelming. The level also starts to sort of sag somewhere in the middle, as some tricks used start to repeat themselves. Nevertheless I would recommend downloading as long as you're not expecting normal run & gun level.

Definitely the scariest. Can't say the best, but definitely a good job on making it scary. I'd say 5 if you had the amount of detail plunked into Hellcore 2.0. That is the definition of detail.

VERY good, and atmospheric, one of the scariest, most un-nerving wads ever, its very dark, you have no weapons and hardly any health, and youre lost in a huge citadel, while screams of the agnoised prisoners reach your ears..an essential download!

It's atmospheric for sure, but also dark (as in no lights, not goth), mazey, blind mapped, lonely and more run than run n shoot. I'm not as big a fan of exploring as I am of blowing stuff up, and you don't get to blow much up in this one.

Fairly good atmosphere, and some neat tricks and effects here and there, but overall a little underwhelming. 3/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
