About This File

This is an experimental PWAD file for use with DOOM. It is rather simple since I cannot generate the nodes structure for anything much more complex than this. This level has been generated entirely by hand. No editors were used to produce it.

Awesome. The first wad. so simple, yet it started something great. by hand, no fancy pants editor. this is legendary. hey man, you earn my respect as one of the greatest people ever. other than Ralph Baer of course, no one can ever compare to him. but anyways, who cares if its simple, or not good looking, its legendary. the best wad ever, because of how it was made. its in comparison to the brown box.(the first console/video game system ever.)

Impressive feat, but it would have been even nicer if it had been packaged with a document explaining exactly what his process was.

We will never truly be able to comprehend just how important of a piece of history this WAD file is. I think I'm about to cry.

Damn, the author could have at least put a berserk pack in the second room if he wanted us to kill all the monsters.

Well, as mentioned it's two square rooms. The first has a shotgun man and a shotgun, and the second has three imps and two barons of hell. And a switch on the far wall that ends the level. You don't have to kill the monsters before flicking the switch, you can just leave without hurting them, although they attack you. I was impressed with the fast, smooth 3D graphics and the sounds, which were in stereo! But I feel the game needs a bit more work.

The first add on Doom ever, and it was made not even using an editor!. Upon this tens of thousands of wads have been released. 5 Stars for the effort put into it. -PC

This was made with a HEX Editor. That fact ALONE gets it a 5 star rating.

The sad thing is that the texturing actually better than many of the lazily-built maps that came afterwards.

Historic? Yes. Fun to play? No. Two square rooms with more monsters than you can kill with the ammo provided unless you use the fist. For historical interest or hardcore .wad collectors only.

It's a great wad overall; detail, balance, gameplay, atmosphere and storyline are excellent - at least for the time it was made. For the heck of it I tried to get max kills... and tried and tried for about half an hour... and I got it! Max kills on UV in 1:32!

Pure artwork. This ranges with the same dudes who create small assembler programms in screencode on their C64. 5 Stars!

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
