Castle Of Eternal Carrot In The Sky

About This File

The background to this level is weird... just like the level itself. I had a dream about a very weird Doom level, and when I woke up I remembered the level almost exactly. I couldn't resist building the thing, and here it is... :) As I said, this is almost exactly like in the dream, but I had to make some changes because of engine limits (no RoR etc), design improvements and input from the testers.

To shreds, you say. Well, how is his sanity holding up? To shreds, you say. Most psychotic map: Discordant music that will make you want to plug your ears, every fucking thing is painful and you're never targeted by fewer than 50 monsters including chaingunners and arch-viles so far away you'll want to call in an airstrike, 4 cyberdemons at close quarters, hoards of teleporting cacodemons. Play if you must but don't blame me if you gnaw your own arm off and lose every shred of compassion and human decency.

Sorry, but I didn't like this wad. I found it to be too detailed and too wide open. I had monsters coming in at me from every angle! It's just not necessary. And the cyberdemons atop each tower? Heh. 3/5

Would be fun but cockblocking flying monsters completely ruined it.

Five stars, superb. Huge and detailed and floats in the air, like a bit impossible thing. Odd music which is reminiscent of Michael Nyman; nasty bit with cacodemons. Expansive views. Works with ZDoom; even goes slow on my ageing 1ghz Duron, probably doesn't work on a 486dx2/66. Five stars. I love you, man.

I'd have to say that you remember your dreams pretty damn well. If your claims are true, then your brain capacity far exceeds mine. That caco maze near the end was pretty tough. =/ Now I gotta beat it with 100% kills. >=) **** - Kochipahk

Hooray for a level with some real expanse in the height dimension. Looks good from any angle. Some fights are hard, but the monsters don't get in the way of you exploring the level. The invisible stairs are fun. 5/5

Now this is odd. It's a castle level, that floats in the sky. It's mid-sized and very detailed, with some clever 3D catwalks and so forth. The layout is a bit samey and symmetrical, but there's lots of action - most of the monsters attack you at once, and you can provoke some wicked fights. Like most dreams it is strange and hyperviolent, with lots of chaingun sniping. The second bit, with the cacodemons, doesn't really work, but overall it's a kind of masterpiece.

To all who say it's too wasy, increase the monster speed, make the monsters respawn, play on nightmare, and shuddap! This is greatly detailed and refined maped, GJ. -Chronoteeth

Given that this is based on a dream and therefore comes from his subconscious, this level gives an insightful look into the mind of the madman who is Fredrik Johansson.

Weird, creative, original and evil. I liked it, although a gameplay was a bit frustrating due to the strange layout. Still, I love surreal levels, so try it if you like weird doom levels. 4 stars. -TeH NeXuS

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
