About This File

This is a compilation of the WADs entered in Doomworld's seventh speedmapping exercise. Participants were given 100 minutes to create a Doom 2 level on a certain theme. This week's theme was to build a Doom 1 level in the episode 1 style.

for the seventh iteration of dwspd, the theme was to "build a Doom 1 level in Episode 1 style". this theme contrasts quite well with the previous theme of building a final level of Doom 2 in dwspd006, but the familiarity of Episode 1 style levels in E1Mx is bound to put a damper on the overall score of this one. you'll notice that Fredrik isn't here this time around, so there's not much to be wowed by his great speedmaps. the rest of the maps are just speedmap juice, they are usually mediocre and have a few bugs, some are more blatant than others (the first map you can just skip everything since Blackterror forgot to tag the exit door as a key door). also you'll need to warp to E1M9, since E1M3 does not go to the secret map. unlike the others that have generally mixed quality in many different mapslots, the levels actually seem to get better the more you go through. the first few maps are shit and are really small in size, but the layouts and monster count increases and things get more fun as you go along.

Nine levels dated July 2001. It feels like an actual 1995 megawad, which is either a good thing or a bad thing depending on your outlook. E1M1 is a fun intro; E1M2 is trivial (basically just two rooms); E1M3 has more baddies, but it's pretty bad; E1M4 looks promising but is again just two rooms; E1M5 has four rooms, but a good monster rush; E1M6 and E1M7 taken together are easily the best two levels; E1M8 is potentially good but bugged (SLIGE?); E1M9 is just dull.

These are okay for speed maps. I suppose they are organized by difficulty because there aren't any barons in the last level yet you get some earlier. The last level has a high-damage floor in a central room with a non-liquid which makes it a deadly map. "Boom compatible" sounds like bullshit unless I messed something because I played each level with vanilla. This seemingly false flag forced me to play level by level in case they broke, instead of in one go. ***

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
