Mayan Temple

About This File

This is an upgraded version of Mayan666.

Mayan667 is based on the architecture of the ancient Mayan civilization. There is a large open area containing four buildings, three of which are pyramids. In the center is a sunken court where a kind of soccer to the death was once played. There are also four small underground areas off the large open area. See hint at the end of this file if you can't find the rocket launcher.

This is my attempt to create a level that works well for either deathmatch or single play. It has been play tested in all modes and tweaked for maximum fun.

Neat classic map, nice custom textures. A little too many lost souls.

Mayan Temple feels like one of those 1994 classics that remain in our memories as an exemplar of a good concept that is, technically, poorly executed, either due to a limit of tools and creativity, but at least you can say that the presentation here is that of a clear, fantastic idea that personally appeals to me.

As the name indicates, what we have here is a map that tries to recreate, in a somewhat arbritrary way, a Mayan architecture or at least visuals that give some idea of Mesoamerican culture. While it fails miserably in the architectural/geometric aspect, the map still possesses a certain charisma thanks to its simplicity and directness. We start on what appears to be a ball field (ancient Mayan game) with a few secret paths on either side of the map. The architecture is quite simple, even if the ''pyramids'' are not surprising, I think their very design is so cute that I can't help but smile. Considering it's 1994, I've seen worse examples out there.

Perhaps most surprising is the use of photorealistic textures, something that would be popularized by Trinity College. In fact, between Trinity and Mayan Temple there is only 4 months difference.

While its design is somewhat simple at first glance, it is creative and entertaining enough to offer about 10 minutes of clear nostalgic fun. The layout is simple, uncomplicated and follows a clear line of combat that gives us some sweet surprises for each encounter. From the awakening in the structure to the final fight in the middle of the field. It's fun, solid for what it is and something really worth trying just for its appealing concept.

Interesting piece of doom history and an alright 1994 map.

Mayan temple is a small 1994 map, another one which attempts to create a realistic setting. It's made by Paul Turnbull, who would go on to make Map23: Lunar Mining Project for TNT: Evilution.

Mayan Temple comes with a surprising amount of custom textures, which are pretty interesting. Turnbull's approach to aid his realistic setting was to use photographs of real life locations and props to make textures. If you remember TNT's Map23, you'll notice the same thing, with cave textures which are photographs of actual caves. Those are originally from here. Similarly, other textures are converted photographs of Mayan Murals, which are quite similar to the egyptian murals in TNT Map31.

Some of the new textures look fine, but other simply do not fit well with Doom's original ones.

The visual are alright, certainly unique for the time, but they aren't as good as the best of 1994, like Galaxia.

Layout is pretty simple, but thankfully much more open than most maps of the time. There are no boring mazes, which is welcome and the architecture is good for it's time.

Gameplay is very basic, but the map is short so it doesn't hinder it very much.

Overall, Mayan Temple has some interesting ideas and lot of effort obviously went in, especially considering all the new textures, but it's simply too short and the gameplay too basic to be comparable to the best maps from 1994. Still, worth a look. Also, it's in E1M1 slot which means At Doom's Gate is the music, which doesn't really fit. My advice is idmus18.

A classic old wad. I'll give it 4 out of 5 because of its age. I remember playing this wad years ago... brings back memories. It's not bad on difficulty 4... bit tough.

Odd wad. Decent architecture for so old a map, at least in the more creative areas. Play is passable but a little dull. There are some odd teleports (if you get onto the throne and then step off, you get sent elsewhere, for example.) The textures are a mixed bag--some are nice, some are weird-looking, and for some reason there are a few of funerary masks of Egyptian Pharaohs (in a Mayan level?) Not really good, but better than a lot of shit that's out there.

The readme mentions Mayan soccer; I am not sure if this is historically accurate. Still, the level was probably pretty impressive in 1994, with an open-plan layout and some textures from Trinity.wad (which means that these Mayan temples have brickwork from Trinity College, Cambridge, England). Nowadays it seems a bit dull - there's a decent lot of monsters, but you can dodge 'em - although it might be good in Deathmatch.

"soccer to the death" refers to ōllamaliztli, a Mesoamerican alternative to conventional warfare, with no exact idea of its rules in ancient times. Currently, it resembles something of volleyball, except the ball weighs a ton and you can only strike it with your hips. MAYAN667 is a decent diversion from '94 with psychedelic custom textures and some exploration, but too much of the level is dominated by the courtyard and ball court. You get a couple of large fights out of it, at least.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
