Cavemen

About This File

A nocturnal level, mostly in caverns. This is my 9th level, a very huge level, and ... ok, hard! You have been captured by these demonic cavemen and all your buddies are dead or turned into killing undead bodies, just now you have destroyed one of those poor creatures and have taken his pistol, now you will show these demons that keeping you alive was a pure mistake. This level overwrites level MAP07 of DoomII.

Another complex and pretty good (and long to complete, i took something like 45/50 minutes to complete it!) map from Sphagne after Avengers (that i played long time ago), pretty classy in design, very cool theme and layout (especially the grey buildings in the canyon), but kinda hard to navigate, lots of backtracking and (is most probably like to waste them) not enough ammo for passing this, founding myself with chainsaw baron and arachnotrons and this not totally fun. But there's lot's of interesting design choices and trickery (especially the tag 667 usage here, it was unexpected! At first i thought this was just a normal map using the MAP07 slot for some reason), also the monster usage and the starving of ammo make this a challenging wad! Maybe that 4 reverant in sequence when i was short of ammo in the second gray building it was too harsh, but overall pretty enjoyable stuff!

You must excuse me for writing "Jumping is cheating, you know!" for my wads, because I made these levels between 1995-1999 for vanilla DOOM and by 2002 that I was uploading them here, jumping was being implemented in the source ports, and was considered to be cheating.

And because of my shortsightedness I could not predict that it would become "a very important part of the game" in later years, and people would judge me without looking at the time of the wads.

My mistake.

By the way, a great wad, I know. ;)

P.S. Who knows, I might even consider coming back to DOOM editing and make wads with jumping in their core game-play.

Kinda mazey but when you figure out where you are and where to go next,it's pretty good.Plenty of ammo and health-no need to scrounge.Good amount of monsters, enough to kill 20-30 mins. of your time. Fairly complicated design-must have taken quite awhile to build. A worthwhile effort.4*-d.d.koop

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
