Completely depriving the player of ammo and forcing him to fight several barons in a tiny room is supposedly fun.

Tried 6 different maps several times, but I can't play this for more than a minute before ZDoom (2.7.1) or GZDoom (1.8.02) freezes the UI part of my PC (i7-2600K, XP), making a hard reset necessary. A nodes rebuild didn't solve this problem. As this is the first time that I've encountered such problems, and f.e. resource hog ED4_RfO still runs perfectly, there's presumably something quite wrong with this mapset. So 'till there's a solution: 1* for the effort only.

ambitious work for a UD megawad. very stylish and quite difficult too. what the fuck was with E3M3 though.

I found this to be overrated. It wasn't outright poor, but much of it is a mediocre blur, and some of the better levels went on way too long (e.g. E4M6). Difficulty-wise, it's not much harder than the original Doom for the most part, outside some bullshit traps and some later levels having little resources. My biggest gripe was the secrets, with the majority being behind unmarked walls with no hint that they're there, meaning you're going to have to wallhump everything to find them if you don't cheat.

All the maps (or just about) are awesome, so my only quibble is that after E1 some episodes show style inconstincies (some maps aren't same style as original episodes). Particularily E3M7 and E4M2 (and perhaps a few more) caught me as drastically out of place. Still, the maps themselves are awesome!

Horrible English, great megaWAD. One of the best things about 2002ADO is that each episode has its own distinctive theme (most of the time, at least) and there is even a storyline of some sort, culminating in the rescue of Mrs. Doom Marine ;)

how cant this be legendary? theres so many great things about this wad that are impossible to put in one review. great architecture, graphics level design, and thousands more! one of the few misbenefits is it usually makes my doomsday kickstarts memory break but i play it in unleashed and it literally kicks ass!

I spoke too soon... after episode 2, the gameplay really falters and turns into every trap being three cacos and a Baron teleporting in to help you waste even more ammo. E3M6 was particularly frustrating, with oceans of nukage and practically no health. I wound up warping through most of episodes 3 and 4. Still, though, the first two episodes alone, plus the music, are enough to make this one a keeper. Final score, 4/5. --Tofu

Boring, terrible excuse for a classic wad. I hope you like running around square rooms pushing lots of meaningless switches that unlock more square rooms.

The first half of the wad is decent; the second half is INCREDIBLY INFURIATING. An inexcusable shortage of ammo and health, tight spaces with multiple barons, and an overuse of teleporting enemy traps along with altogether cheap fights made ep. 3 and 4 a miserable experience. To the wad's credit, the maps all look great and flow well for the most part. But the marred gameplay and shitty music (overall) make this a big thumbs down for me. 2/5

Excellent! This is the best Doom megawad! It retains the old-school charm of the original Doom levels yet it feels refreshing playing through these maps. Great music too!

The best full Doom I replacement out there. The second best needs more detail (hint, hint).

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
