To the vote immediately before mine: if this is a terrible excuse for a classic wad, then why don't you share some classic wads that you think have done well. Not to imply that you're wrong to say this, but given the vote and the comment, it's hard to tell your rationale. Anyway, I think this wad is a keeper and a much-needed asset of the community. 5/5

Irregular megawad. First episode is boring. Second is decent but ugly. Third is good. Fourth is fantastic. Music ranges from good to awful. Although 4/5.

Absolutely gob smackingly legendary. A bold tribute to DOOM indeed. I only wish for a sequel one day. The architecture is outstanding considering this was built for vanilla doom.exe, whilst later enhanced for ZDOOM it's still breath taking. The music is downright catchy and chilling, throwing you right into the surrounding despair. The traps are beautiful, unpredictable and devilish. Only complaint or rather applaud? Secrets are craftly hidden, I'm gutted to see 11 secrets slip me by at times. -Krypto

My favorite Megawad for THREE years running now. Great levels, great fun, and the best... GREAT MUSIC. I think I love this wad so much just because the music rules. I even get inspiration for my own levels listening to it. I hope The team, and Paul keeps making good levels, and GREAT music.

I can fully attest to the last sentence in the description! One of the top UDoom megawads. I just wish ALL the levels in the episodes followed the right style; as is E2M3, E2M6, E3M5, E3M7, E4M1, E4M2, and E4M8 are blatantly in the wrong style. And that's not even considering secret levels. Plus the E2 secret exit configuration makes it impossible to play every available map in that episode seamlessly. Still a 5* grade cause it's really fun and good-looking.

This has to be the only wad in the database with over 10 votes (let alone over 35!) that still maintains a perfect 5 stars. I don't see why I should give it anything different.

It's a full fledged UDoom game, it should be good, but something felt screwy about playing this thing. Maybe it was the music. E1 sucked, E2 was OK, E3 ranks as the best IMO, E4 unfortunately suffers from all kinds of problems. The secret levels are just not fun at all. Actual levels have an annoying flow, combat is done in a way that it feels like a chore, the secret areas are either hidden to the point you need to use IDBEHOLDA or NOCLIP because absolutely nothing you do can open some of them up. 2/5

Great, although a bit simplistic in nature. A must have for old school doomers.

IMHO this is not the best megawad out of there but still good one. ^^ too harsh about bugs, maybe your computer can't handle it, i don't own the best computer but i have a fair one and this wad works correctly for me, no bugs at all. my only complaint was that it was not really classic styled episode but still one fair. download it today! o_o ****

E1 sticks to the overall E1 style quite well. It is like Death Tormention: E1 Edition, which is a very good thing. The themes move around more in the later episodes and there are some misfits, though every episode has several maps that stay to the style of the original or very close. Chris Hansen really helped with E4 since 4/6 of his maps are in this ep, all in great E4-style! He did a good E2 and E3 map too, though. Regardless it's all a lot of fun so 5/5 based on that, possibly the best Doom I megawad!

I've only made it part way through episode 2 so far, but MAN, am I blown away! The level design is intuitive and fun -- while not completely linear, the progression makes sense, and you rarely find yourself lost and clicking walls at random. The music... well, it's not very DOOM-like, but it still gets you pumped up and ready to charge in. The atmosphere is great, the monster balance is great... 5/5! It's awesome. --Tofu

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
