About This File

An Ultimate ZDoom episode! Yes, I decided to go all modern and build a source port only episode. Having seen the ZDoom features for the first time shortly after the release of Shadowcaster, I decided to build for ZDoom, as it's features are REALLY cool, and I have lots of cool ideas for them!

Also, for the first time I decided to include new sprites and sounds, to take advantage of the ambient feature and to create an atmosphere like that of Quake 2 and Sin.

And finally, I have decided to experiment with modified game settings, in an attempt to create more interesting and harder gameplay. I have reduced the amount of ammo you can carry at the start (a backpack will double it as usual) and have made two creature enhancements.

The episode has an industrial/hi-tech theme, influenced by Quake 2, Half-Life, Sin and of course, James Bond!

too much scripting for my taste. I wanted fun action but what I got were levels that drag on. and I'm usually a fan of TUD wads.

Far too much scripting, and too many puzzles of which many require several re-attempts over and over until you get the right sequence. The rest of the gameplay is pretty average and sometimes a slog. Grey architecture doesn't help either. A nice enough idea though, but just average in execution.

This wad has some good ideas but is ruined by a lot of really bad level design that just isn't fun at all. Look past the scripting and you'll find little of worth.

If you can handle some timed puzzles, then this wad should be for you. I can't but still 5 stars.

Normal wad the first level annoying as bloody hell. And I think the ambient sounds are a bit overused. But it uses some zdoom features such as scripting quite nicely. And the showdown was real cool. -Dron

Pretty cool maps with some really neat tricks. VERY heavy on "puzzles" tho, and often there is little to no indication as to where you need to go or exactly what to do. I had to check youtube playthroughs several times. Still pretty nice and atmospheric, I recommend it if you don't mind getting stuck few times.

I don't exactly get what it has to do with 007 but it's a great mod.

5 star wad, very surprised it only has 3.5 surrently. Don't really see anywhere near enough wrong with it for that much point take off. Perhaps a slightly weak point or two (very grey at times), but the good architecture makes that very minor, and a 5 overall.

A good, innovative episode that loses just 1 star for some overly complex puzzles. Well worth it.

I liked it very much, I believe that TUD is one of the best kinds of mapper and scripter for this kind of gameplay. One gripe is that there's no music, it could have done with some music from Goldeneye for the N64. Since I have a wad editor, I can do that myself.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
