Alien Vendetta

About This File

Alien Vendetta offers 32 all new levels, ranging from small fast-paced tech-styled ones, to complex medieval- and hellish-themed maps. Variety was to be expected considering several authors had a hand in the making of these maps and as no specific criteria were given to them. AV originated in '96 as a one-man project, but saw many transitions and was eventually made a team effort in August 1999. What started out as a pure "Hell Revealed" follower balanced out to be something in-between that and a more classic looking megawad. We decided to put more emphasize on detailed architecture while trying to keep the at times ultra hard gameplay in focus. Admittedly recreating the intensity of "Hell Revealed" while trying to create more commonly scaled maps turned out to be quite a challenge. As a result the hardness was tuned down a bit, and fun gameplay became more important than making it as hard as possible. When that's said, AV still holds a somewhat harder skill setting than any serious megawad with the exception of "Hell Revealed" and its sequal. In the tougher maps it will indeed challenge the best players on Ultraviolence, and would probably be more frustrating than fun for the common Doomer. Fortunately we put effort into all levels of difficulty, and would advise anyone who is not looking for hordes of monsters (and the need for planning in order to survive) to play skill 2 or 3. AV skill 3 plays much like "The Plutonia Experiment" does on its skill 4. Skill 2 would be the favourable pick for anyone who wants to have a more relaxed journey through the levels (be warned tho, even on skill 2 AV holds a few surprises =) Altho map continuity exists between a few levels we decided to go for variation instead of a one-themed 32 level scenario. This difference in scenery from map to map hopefully contributes to less redundant gameplay. Each level is completable from scratch, but when approached this way it should be noted that secret areas become vital for health and ammo supply. The first episode consists of a variety of "earthly" themed maps/bases and a few tech facilities. Difficulty here leans more towards easy even on skill 4, and primarily functions as a warm-up. Episode 2 starts out with a series of techbases and ends up in a more brick styled fashion. The first really hard scenes for the average player will occur in this episode. The final chapter is mainly hell themed and holds the most extreme levels in terms of hardness. A few of these are up to "Hell Revealed" difficulty. If you're looking for a challenge combined with atmospheric levels, Alien Vendetta should be right up your alley. Enjoy :)

Every Doomer should be required by law to download this wad. Oh, yeah. It's THAT good. 5/5

I now have Requiem, Hell Revealed 1 & 2, Alien Vendetta and others, and I am impressed. A wad that I found cool was "The 5th project of Doom", for Ultimate Doom. UV all the way of course. Half the time I had between 16 and 40% life, and occasionally i would go through a whole level with 2% health. Not as god as the above, but i still recommend it. P.S the music rocks -Andreil Darkstorn

5 stars. I don't need to explain why this is a 5-star wad.

Purely the best megawad ever made. Beautiful looks, haunting music. While there are a tiny number of megawads in the same league (none of which I think are a patch on this), Alien Vendetta offers an even better experience on co-op than single player, turning a massive Dooming epic into ultimate nirvana. - Major Rawne

Im rather disappointed by the fact that its pretty buggy, I spotted 1 major bug in Map01, some minor bugs between Map02 to Map06 and 1 that made me unable to complete the stage in Map07. I stopped at Map07 and skipped to Map30, but again I doubt its even possible since one of the lift flew up before I can barely reach it. Well, despite the numerous bugs in these 8 maps alone, the map design is incredible, comparable to Scythe. Difficulty is ok for me, since I like those monster infested maps.

Some maps are insane (Map08, where you have to deal with a archvile and a cyberdemon, chainguners and imp): "Ultra hard gameplay in focus". Great architecture, atmospheric, but the "challenge" is far from what I like! I don't like the gameplay, too much permanently challenging: "It would probably be more frustrating than fun for the common Doomer". I'm a common Doomer, and I had no fun, most of the time. 2/5 - Jive

Jive - you're quoting from the av.txt out of context. I said skill 4 might be too frustrating for the common Doomer, but you seem to disregard the posibility of playing on a lower skill. I don't mind negative critiques at all if they have some rational basis in anything, but common? Is this the old "I'm too proud to go down a skill level when I play" deal? :) Bashing the gameplay is daft unless you point out what you dislike on each skillsetting, but you can't generalize it. -Johnsen

Pretty fun overall, but unfortunately suffers from inconsistent level progression and design styles at times. Almost feels like a community chest half the time.

In terms of style, HR is vanilla and you're all strawberry, baby. The detailed levels are beautiful and play into the difficulty, where HR goes a bit more for straight extreme warfare. Simply awesome!

often considered the last classic megawad, Alien Vendetta does what Hell Revealed don't.

so many people think this aged poorly but I say otherwise. to this day I would still replay Alien Vendetta's maps, and there's not really any maps here that would be considered stinkers apart from MAP30. many of the maps are well designed, and the lighting is absolutely impeccable. the gameplay is actually quite reasonable, delving into slaughter territory a few times, but not making an absolute mess in the gameplay. Demonic Hordes? expect the hordes to come there. and Dark Dome is a nice spiritual successor to Post Mortem and even moreso. everyone knows MAP20, love it or hate it, but it still was done in an impressive style despite its linearity. other maps tended towards many different styles, one map is pretty open while the other's quite claustrophobic. AV gets compared heavily to HR, but HR actually did have some sucky maps, while AV only has one (or it used to have two, Valley of Echoes is pretty bad).

Anders pretty much led the project the whole way through, giving us many different maps that make it hard to tell what style he was going for. MAP18 remains my favorite in the entire set out of his maps, giving us three keys in one particular area as well as a deadly hall near the middle. MAP26 is a powerful arena map as I said before which is followed by three maps that feel like three different odysseys. Vorpal's maps showcase lots of compact techbase combat, with the zombieman hallway in MAP13 being a key highlight amongst others. the late Kim Malde though holds the most memorable ones, the hitscanner-heavy MAP10, the seemingly forgettable but actually quite memorable MAP23, and of course MAP20. the way he designed these maps proves Kim was at the top of the game, and I adore what I see and fight here. there's no way people should say this is one of the worst wads ever, the ones who haven't played all the way through certain maps honestly just aren't skilled enough, but they need to realize that modern mapsets are still significantly tougher than any of the maps in AV.

Amazing! This is my favorite "hard" megawad of all time. It has it all: the intricate gameplay and deatiled architecture of requiem and mm 1 and 2 and the brutallity and epic atmosfere of hr. There was so much effort put into this. The only 2 megawads that I liked more were Requiem and Eternal doom. The best map for me was map11 ,but map20, map 26, map05, map08, and map24 were classic as well. I only disliked maps 21 and 30. A 5 without a moment of thinking.

Very impressive, to say the least. I kept stopping to stare at the beautiful sectors and amazing structures you guys made in that wad file. I got to level 4 and saved, then came straight here to tell you how much I loved playing it. Good job! Keep up the amazing wad creation!

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
