About This File

We worked on this wad together for several months, each person had a week and then passed the wad on. It turned out quite successful and the process was steady. We chose upon a tech-ish theme since we already familiar with that style, and Doom was made for that ;)

This map started out for vanilla doom2.exe but we quickly pushed the limits. Several days before release however, the HOM's and VPO's were vaporized with MANY thanks to BSP. QWERTY and stx-Vile are credited with pinpointing them.

This is from 2003. It's a techbase with a mild retro feel; it's more elaborate than any old-fashioned level, but the design avoids modern source-port features (it reminds me of the Monolith levels). The action is modern, though, with lots of great close-up fighting against tough baddies. It's a bit too switch-hunty at times and the difficulty is erratic, with archviles near the start and no real end battle, but I liked it. There's a good bit with a cage.

I don't usually give five stars to a wad unless it's really exciting, really epic, or really crazy. This is a good bit of Doom-playing though.

I usuall don't give 5 stars to single map wads but this one deserves it. Great gameplay, great design and it's hard. What more can you want from a Spencer map? AV worthy. 5/5 - Belial

Very awesome map. Mix between themes and styles, old school yet new school. Recommended.

I know I probably give 5s too often around here, but I think as a single level this one REALLY deserves it. Great atmosphere, well thought out gameplay, and the kind of elaborate layout that you don't see around too often anymore. Really awesome stuff. This wad is sooooo good it almost hurts. ;) So.... 5/5 I guess? - DeathevokatioN

AWESOME. This had better keep having 5 stars and anyone who lowers the rating needs to leave a review stating why they did not want to give it the magical 5. I'll cry so you can hear me if this rule isn't followed. So be warned: Please refrain from violating my rule!

Excellent. I wish the bully-boy who wrote the previous review would STFU though.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
