Doom Redemption

About This File

A 'tribute' to Doom 1. All the styles of episodes 1, 2, 3 (and even 4) squished into a 9 map episode.

This wad doesn't use any ZDoom features that are not seen in the original doom, except for HUD messages at the start of each level, and of course the features that come with Hexen format maps.

Excellently paced Doom 1 WAD with interesting levels, nice visuals and good trap ideas.

One of the best Doom I episodes that combine most (or all) of the original game's styles into a single 9-level package. A must play for any Classic Doom fan. Also very nice music remixes to top it off (although why is 'Suspense' from E1M5 used in an E2 style map here? Additionally, I cannot recognize what the secret level music is a remix of, does anyone know?).

Well it's not a megawad. Too bad, as this is very clearly one of the top classic style mapsets around. The upgraded music is truly icing on the cake. This was absolutely robbed not being in the top 10 of 2003.

A pretty good set, only complaint is that a few levels could have used a bit more detail. Still nice looking though, and very good to play, in other words a fine tribute wad - 4 stars.

Really good set of levels inspired by Ultimate Doom. The music might not appeal to everyone but the levels themselves are great.

I cannot get over how the first E2 level was so like the original. That was a true spiritual successor to E2M1-6. The last level left a little to be desired, though. It did look very nice at least.

I think the E3/E4 style needs more playing time (finding M9 helps though), and this could have been virtually a non-complaint had M8 just been constructed as a full level ending with a boss rather than boss only, but otherwise, these levels are awesome and really excel at their goals. 5/5 (Taking note it's ZDoom only, it could have been fixed also if you just made an episode w/ more than 9 levels, and you could do some tweaks to make M9 mandatory and M0 the real secret. But that's speculation.)

This is an excellent Doom inspired episode. I loved every minute. As for the detail, I was too busy spraying the walls with blood and guts. Nice job SlayeR. 5/5

A very enjoyable mapset with great sounding music remixes. A tad more health items at the end would have been better for higher difficulties(Cyberde mons and Mastermind with 15% health after the barons and shotgunners? Sometimes that supercharge isn't enough). A bit less "spamming" of cacodemons and greater variety of enemies would have also been an improvement. 4/5

I cannot heap enough praise onto this awesome WAD. It's a great remake, with some sneaky traps that scare you, and clever level design obviously inspired by E1 but not a blatant copy like most end up making. A good fun challenge, sometimes you have to conserve ammo, but it's not impossibly difficult, and everyone loves chainsawing Cacos. The music has all been redone in MOD format, and sounds absolutely amazing. The best WAD I have ever played! 6/5 -jj

E1M8 most original epic boss fight with classic doom feel. This wad totally captured the whole "I just wana see whats next!" I may even run through it again. Best wad Ive played in awhile since Eviltech. Classic doom look and feel.

... A bit more detail?!? Hey???... No matter what!! Anonymous sucks... Great gameplay, beautiful architecture, secrets not too well secretly kept. Awesome megawad, in the same spirit than the original Doom, which is very rare. It should stay legendary and the name of SlayeR (so deeply involved with ZdoomGl) on top of the Best'Of Mappers, with Dittohead. - Jive

A clever concept pulled off with flair. The levels are fun but challenging, the story is understated but well done, and the music is an excellent take on the original score. Well done.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
