About This File

A warlord has harnessed ancient powers, and is turning his subjects into wolf like creatures. He must be stopped before his wolfen army grows beyond possible defeat.

Please configure a "Use Aeon Attack" in the controls menu. Aeon mana is described below.

Really good hub, the atmosphere and level architecture is some of the best of the best and the epic music selection certainly helps, the Aeon mana is an interesting concept, albeit I didn't use it that much outside of my passive ability (which I couldn't figure out for the cleric). The clock puzzle was a pain without the new weapon, even with the boots of speed you have aprox. 4 seconds to make both bells ring at nearly the same time, so there's that. And as another reviewer pointed out, some puzzles are broken in the latest GZDoom, so better use ZDoom to ensure they work as intended. While I did enjoy encountering new monsters, their sprites are quite rough looking and almost out of place with the base HeXen monsters, and the final boss sucks, but hey, so did Korax in vanilla!

Overall, it's a great hub, but some aspects could've been better. Still, if you like HeXen and other HeXen mapsets, this is a must-play . 5/5 stars

Excellent adventure with a dark atmosphere, cool architecture, and fun gameplay. The level/puzzle design is well-done, with engaging puzzles across multiple maps and interesting spins on the traditional locales (eg. the fire level is a mountain on a sea of lava). The whole wolf theme was also unique and interesting. It was very helpful that completing everything necessary on a map resulted in the message "Map completed", preventing unnecessary backtracking. Unfortunately I didn't acquire enough aeon mana to unlock the aeon attack, but I did get enough to unlock the aeon passive (regenerating mana for the mage), and it was very useful. The new enemies & bosses look good, although they aren't perfect. There are a couple of oversights like how the wolves lack a death animation or the ettinwolves lack most noises. The best enemies were probably the statue bosses (who totally took me by surprise), as they were complete, fit best with Hexen's artstyle, and filled a unique role.

Unfortunately, the flame mask and ruined town puzzles do not work properly in newer versions of GZDoom, so you'll be forced to noclip to complete both of them if you start the game not in an older version. That isn't the author's fault though, so it's not a criticism.

Old -- and it shows -- but it has heart, and it shows that too.

This version doesn't work with the latest version of ZDoom (2.6.1 as of writing). Fortunately, there's a version which does http://www.prdarkfox .com/doomstuff/wolfe n.7z Also, this is a great wad. :)

With the one of the later versions of gzdoom (i'm using r404), it works perfectly up until you need the firemask. It won't be usable. You'll just have to noclip through the bars with a teleporter in the middle outside of that cave to continue. Everyting else works just great. -GuntherDW

Excellent usage of ZDoom features. Some of the sprites are a hair awkward and one of the songs is annnoying as all hell, but other than those two minor quibbles every kilobyte of this wad is pure win. 4/5 -deadnail

Great atmosphere, impressive job keeping the player from being lost. I only got lost about a quarter of the way through--after getting the Gear from the swamp area, I went to the town area, cleared out the temple, and couldn't figure out where to go next. I could tell that the alcove at the back of the temple was supposed to have a door, but I couldn't tell how to make it open.

this level set is downright amazing. the new enemies and animations blend in well which is what really sets it apart from the rest. the music is awesome and the puzzles are well done. what hits the spot are the boss fights. 5/5.

http://zdoom.org/fil es/lars/63a.cab If I remember right, Wolfen was made to run with that version of ZDooM. It works for me. Legendary wad, 5 stars -Trollmann-

New weapons, new monsters, kickass stuff. Only real complaint is the boss fight- seemed like it was just thrown in there. Otherwise 5 stars.

Very nice! Even better replay value (thanks to Aeon powers)! Probably the best user-made Hexen hub yet. The only problem was that there was no death animation for one of the new monsters (the werewolf). But that was the only problem. Everything else was awesome. 5/5

Okay, but nowhere near as good as it's made out to be. The new monsters are all either recolors or have ugly sprites, the techno music tracks aren't fitting at all, and there's far too much "what did that damn switch do"/"where is that damn key/switch/whatever " (you know you've got problems when the secret level is easier to find than the standard way to progress).

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
