Great quake 2 design with lots of detail and true 3d feel. Robinson is deffinitely among my favorite designers. I like his light usage of scripting and the completing of objectives-style gameplay. However the gameplay itself was marred a lot by having to use vavoom with it's strange physics and overall slowness. I assume I missed some secrets so the ammo was tight throughout until the last part, which proved to be somewhat frustrating, thus I'm giving it a 4. -TeH NeXuS

This thing rocks. The models aren't random, nope, they are to establish the atmosphere, even if they are rippies, they're well chosen. The map quality is very high and I don't care if the maps don't have 4k sectors of detail. It still looks solid. The gameplay is very entertaining. There's nothing wrong IMO with Quake2 like gameplay. Solid thing. 4 stars.

I found this quite dull. Conceptually it is flawed, in that it transforms Doom into a simple, sprite-based Quake II mission pack (it also resembles N64 Doom). But unlike several other similar projects, such as the Darkening II for example, it doesn't really build on that. Once the novelty of seeing a cut-down version of Quake II running on a Doom engine wears off you're left with a set of angular, gloomy levels with simple battles and some Quake/Unreal weapon sprites.

The idea of Silent Steel is a dark gloomy ambient Quake2 base tech theme. Also those quake2 guns are md2 models if you cared to look in the md2 folder. Darken2 is its own game, so dont compare the two. Level design is more impressive than darken with slopes, static lighting and 3dfloors to name a few. Maybe you should try the crap load of e1\doom2 stock wads with 980 monsters thrown randomly to keep you interested and leave the quake2 theme alone eh?

Very good. Generally quite tight gameplay, with just enough health and ammo. Not many big battles or traps/surprises though. Looks good throughout. Recommended.

Nice use of 3D areas, lots of stuff to kill. Worth downloading Vavoom to play if you don't have it :P - Udderdude

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
