About This File

Sacrifices: 1. the time given up to create a WAD. 2. the creatures that I puposely "pinned" so you can walk up and get in their face right before you blast 'em messy. 3. all the newbie deathmatchers :]

Okay level; many random monster spawns that you can avoid, which is bizarre.

Some obvious errors like not aligned textures and some big plain sectors but the whole map had a fun gameplay I liked the nostalgic feel and the oddly shaped rooms 3.5/5

Fun little level :) I liked being freaked out, teleported next to a Cyberdemon in a cramped room :P --Zell_1388

Damn fine map, with a good Doom2 feel.

Don't know why, but gave me warm, fuzzy nostalgic feeling, like I was playing Doom2 for the first time. Maybe because design is very D2 influenced? Dunno, anyway I give it 5/5 for that :) -- Brun Ohn

Not bad for a first try, especially in 1995. Great Gameplay!, but poor texture alignment, and choices. Oh, by the way I just love the exit room. 4 Stars. -PC

Not bad at all for 95, varied room styles keep the gameplay interesting. However I wa not so impressed by the "Romero-Head" exit and felt that it brings down the overall atmosphere. There are misaligned textures but they are not excruciatingly bad and should not ruin the experience. There is enough guns and ammo to defeat the monsters and the map while not extremely exciting, is not boring either. There are a lot worse maps than this and even with it's flaws I feel it is worth 4/5.

This is dated January 1995. It's a nostalgic, likeable level from before the dawn of history; it has most of the old problems (unaligned textures, stuck monsters, angular layout etc), but the gameplay is solid. Unusually high monster count for the period, and the aforementioned bit with the cyberdemon is funny, although you end up with hundreds of rockets for the rest of the level. You can finish without exploring about a quarter of the map.

This was a lot of fun, the gameplay was great, the architecture was very interesting, and the layout was unique! I have to agree about the warm fuzzy feeling this level gives you. Recommended.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
