About This File

This is style-wise a mix of the traditional mountain military base, the generic sewage processing facility and the weird off-world alien base, to put it bluntly. This is the conceptual mix of many weird ideas assimilated during a long time. There are huge, open areas with large battles as well as tight infighting in small dark corridors. I even put in some things that I usually consider to be evil and wrong, such as crusher mazes, jumping puzzles and, god forbid, a sequence where you run from cover to cover while being shot at from a distance by a cyber- demon you don't have enough ammo to take down.

Oh, by the way: Try to get 100% kills on this map. I haven't succeeded myself, but I'm pretty sure it can be done. Really.

It sure as hell looks pretty! Some of the most intelligent architecture we've seen in a long time together with an excellent choice of textures and flats! Add this up with a killer classic Doom 2 gameplay and we have ourselves a winner! Patrick, you are great! -Chris Hansen

Could be improved with texture alignments and a better sky but this is very nice stuff with a classic Doom 2 feel. Also you can SR to the exit switch (which cut my run short unfortunately). 5/5 DWRtag

This is a nice, medium-sized map. It's quite hard with some really challenging traps and fights, but it's achievable. You'll find tech-halls, a nice outdoor area and many nukage areas, a good variety of wide, open areas and narrow rooms and hallways; the ambience is diversified but coherent and it's detailed enough. Layout is complex without being confusing. Good work! 4/5 -Milian

Somehow the map doesn't manage to look pretty. But it's detailed, and the gameplay is quite diversified and fun, fun, fun. Recommended!

I have played many levels better than this and it's not really that detailed either. 3/12/07

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
