About This File

My first map.

A large, two-themed level created for Co-op, inspired by Hell Revealed and Alien Vendetta. Emphasizes large, well-choreographed fights. Exceptionally calibrated for Single Player.

Deus Vult starts you off in an underground tech base and will eventually plunge you into the depths of Dante's Inferno in front of your eyes. Difficulty holds up to the extremes of HR. Legions of monsters. 150 minute [estimated] par time.

The map can be played in two distinct configurations:

Config 1 - Split into four sublevels for people who do not have patience to play through large maps, or do not own a high-end PC (<1.8 GHZ). Also good for co-op play, since smaller levels lag less. Designed to be completable from scratch. *Runs from Map 01-04.*

Config 2 - The full monty, the unabridged version of Deus Vult, for people who likes big maps. Designed to be completable from scratch. WARNING: Needs an EXTREMELY STRONG LIMIT REMOVING SOURCEPORT. *Runs on Map 05.*

Deus Vult infidel!

Ouch, it seems the end draws near. Therefore, Deus Vult has been completed, played through GlBoom+ 2.5.1.5 on HMP.

Now where to start? Probably the beginning, as usual. Deus Vult is a short wad that emphasizes smart and skillful gameplay, requiring the player to plan their tactics before engaging combat. It comes with new music and textures, ENDOOM screen, end level screens, but no new enemies, weapons, or sounds. It is also distributed in 2 ways. The first one comes with 4 action packed levels, which are basically a split version of the one gigantic map. They run from MAP01 up to MAP04, with MAP05 being the giant map. It is designed and balanced for both co-op play and singleplayer.

The action takes place on techbases and it slowly progressed into more hellish areas, eventually culminating in Hell itself where the player faces... Sauron at the very end, acting as a replacement for the traditional Icon of Sin. The gameplay is pretty much slaughter exclusive as the enemy count is pretty high (a few hundreds at lowest), peaking at little over 800 on MAP04, and so is the difficulty, the hardest being, surprisingly, MAP03 and not MAP04. The balance is great most of the being, giving the player enough resources to face a pretty tough opposition, but, as I said, most of the time. This is probably the one big problem of Deus Vult. Although it is challenging from the beginning, there are a number of instances where it does seem outright unfair, with MAP03 being the worst offender. It's simply asinine, and its difficulty lies on an absolute abuse of AVs. Far too often it is incredibly easy to get burned by one, almost all traps have at least one, and they are in the majority of alcoves or pillars, making sniping extremely easy for them and frustrating to the player. Once the starting area is cleared of its vilest traps it proves to be enjoyable, but the beginning is really, really rough, that and another area with damaging floors and little room to kill the much expected AVs. Escaping alive is one insane challenge, I don't remember dying so much in anything I've played until now. MAP03, with all its teleporters and spots also underlines the fact that it's best to know it inside out to get the most out of it, otherwise you will find yourself dying every few minutes, if not even earlier.

MAP04 tones down the abuse of AVs significantly and the level proves to be much more challenging by pushing the player to their limit as opposed to throwing as many enemies as possible in an encounter and adding an absurd amount of AVs or little room to walk and dodge projectiles on top of it. It proves to be a fun and fitting finale after the giant frustration that can be experienced on the previous level, and Sauron being the IoS of DV is a neat little surprise.

Overall, it's a good wad, but it could've been better from my POV. Cutting the obscene amount of AVs on MAP03 alone can vastly improve the experience and contribute to the fun part of it, which is why I wouldn't recommend playing that map alone, unless you're a veteran or know it inside out. Otherwise, have fun slaying demons. "Can't stop the killing... ".

  • Impressive visuals and scale for its time.
  • Epic memes are thankfully limited to secret areas.
  • map04/final quarter stretch is extremely cheeseable compared to the rest.
  • Plenty of time spent cleaning up turret enemies.
  • 3/5

Wow, I remember playing this 11 years ago.. It's still impressive today, far as I'm concerned. To those of you saying the "detail isn't good", please gtfo - For example that circular green room with the Nukage looks awesome and proves you don't need 9999 sectors to make a visually interesting/atmosphe ric area. Totally awesome Doom experience, has aged well too.

I wish my first wad was like this (Don't we all?). very insane maps, although the Icon of Sin/Sauron at the end seems broken or something. regardless of all this, yes, still very insane maps, first one gives indications of what is to come, warping from techbase to immediate hell with just a few rooms. loads of secrets, many of which are weird easter eggs or some shit. second level is one hell of a level, literally, while MAP03 is a bit of a breather before the finale area. you know what you're getting into with Deus Vult, whether you go for the MAP01-MAP04 route or the full thing wit hMAP05, especially once you start with the various arena areas. knowledge of where invulnerabilities are can definitely make some of the harder fights a little easier.

It may be good as a co-op level but it sucks for single play.

Terrible, Maps are super big (and not with the best detail i have to say) with a shitload of archviles that do not give you a free second, all of this mixed with monsters everywhere. It's not a "Hardcore wad", it's just about keeping your fingers on the mouse and shooting everywhere, because you will always hit. 1 Star for the effort .

Wow. The single most visually impressive wad I have ever played. The gameplay is enough to turn most into jello, but it can be dealt with... Start off on wimpy mode or something, and quit complaining. Coop is wonderful here, too. 9.9x10^999999/5

After going back and replaying this wad, I find it much more enjoyable on the the lower difficulty settings. As far as I'm concerned, this wad is quite challenging and fun on even the second hardest setting.

if you find the gameplay horrible then you havent played hell revealed and alien vendetta, the gameplay of this is supposed to kind of clone the two wads, and it does a nice job. Very good, 5-5 stars.

While this is insanely difficult, it is that way by no means on accident. All the monsters are placed very thoughtfully and make for one hell of a challenge that even though I usually have to resort to cheating, it makes me feel bad for doing it instead of frustrated like with bad slaughter maps. However, the 15-minute barrages of high-level monsters teleporting in on most maps and the "Revenant Curve" are more difficult and tedious than they need to be. 4/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
