About This File

A set of varied levels focused on fast, fun gameplay. My initial goal was to create maps suitable for the original engine. Most of the levels work without any problems in doom2.exe, while some may have tiny bugs here and there from the limitations. I also made this set for a quick project to whip up and release for the Doom community. Giving myself the limit of doom2.exe helped me stay focused and get these maps done before they got any bigger! Also, I think demo makers will have fun with these maps, and I hope to see some cool demos! The original set was to be 11 maps, but I have other stuff I have to work on and this was supposed to be wrapped up months ago...life sucks ;P The other 4 maps are planned and WILL be made, sort of like a special edition. Just not at the moment. Maybe after CC2...

first off, i just wanna say that this is seriously an underrated gem of a mapset. i realize that it got a cacoward, but outside of that you very rarely hear about it. which is a shame, because it's absolutely fantastic.

anyways, hoooly shit this wad was way harder than i expected it to be. i went in expecting it to be fairly tame considering that it's just a short little vanilla mapset from 2004, but nope. this kicked my ass. health and ammo are pretty tight considering the large number of enemies you'll be facing, so it can be quite punishing and not accepting of many mistakes. and, mind you, that's on continuous; it'd be much worse if someone were to pistol start it.

the combat is fun and fast-paced, and it never gets old due to the odd weapon progression (for example, map01 is balanced primarily around the plasma rifle) and the wide variety of interesting setpieces. again, you'll be facing quite a number of enemies, but it never goes into slaughter territory as the forces you'll be facing are primarily lots of low-tier enemies supporting a moderate amount of those in the higher tiers. instead, it relies much more on devious monster placement and nasty traps for its difficulty. in my eyes, it's pretty much perfect.

the visuals are wonderful, although i'm a bit biased considering my love of older wads. it's not underdetailed, but it's also not highly detailed; it sits in the middle ground where it looks quite pleasing but simple at the same time. it maintains that doomy feel throughout, and if you're like me and absolutely love that visual style then you'll find yourself quite pleased.

the only real criticism i have is that one of the maps, specifically map04, ends up being tedious and honestly not very fun due to it being a complete and total hitscanner hell, and throughout the wad radiation suits are far too limited in sections where they're desperately needed. both of those are made worse by the overall lack of health, but outside of that there's not much to dislike here.

i really can't recommend this wad enough. while it's certainly not for everyone as its main focus is on the combat, those who're like me and play doom primarily for that will love this wad. it's the perfect length, where it's not too short but it also doesn't overstay its welcome. seriously, play this - it deserves so much more attention than it gets.

Fun WAD with unusual weapon progression. Might be worth it to make several separate saves on map 07 because there's a lot of big damaging floor areas.

A well rounded and balanced wad. Nice level design, good weapon and monster placement, rewarding secrets, and most importantly...good gameplay. Solid set.

Nicely made maps. Barely enough ammo even when used corretly. Map design makes it hard without swarms of monsters. /5

A refreshing set of levels that break away from most conventional Doom maps, focusing on tight, fun, and fast gameplay. Long enough to keep your interest, and short enough to play in one sitting. Highly recommended.

These six levels are great fun, and the difficulty level is best described as exhilarating. I liked the first level best; it's short enough to easily play from the start without feeling the impulse to save, and I enjoyed the simplicity of just having the plasma rifle (an unusual choice). Level two gives you the single-barrelled shotgun, and the rest is similarly parsimonious with the weapons and ammo. The design resembles good-quality levels from 1997, but the gameplay is the thing.

4 stars. a great wad and it is fast paced as it claims, however you'll find yourself in dire need of ammo in dangerous circumstances. very good wad however, recommended.

I give 1 whole star for the good new music and 1 for the level design. However this wad is only fun for someone who thinks Hell Revealed is too easy and can kill Mancubi and those Revenants with a pistol since I'm not that expert player I had to cheat on the first level not my idea of fun sorry. I didn't even get a damn shotgun till like level 2.

These are maps with lots of monsters. They're challenging from the very first minute. Actually, the start is one of the hardest parts of the whole wad, but it's worth the trouble. You'll find some nicely built maps with enough details, though the appearance is not overly innovative. But it's fun to play and should keep you busy from the beginning to the end. 4/5 -Milian

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
