Incomplete set of maps, OK visuals and gameplay. Did not like having to jump to E2 after it ends around M5-M6.

Odd decision not to either fill this out to 32 levels, or cut it down to two episodes; instead, the levels are scattered throughout each of the three episodes. They aren't up to id's standard, being relatively bare and spartan; but the first few levels are fun for a while, with lots of weak monsters to drill through. Falls down later on, becoming irritating "flick the switch, run to the other end of the level, find an obscure door" affairs.

These maps are nothing for today, but they're pretty good overall for '94. I used to play this a lot back in the day. Recommended for old-schoolers; and might just be worth a look for many others.

Hello - Thanks to those who enjoyed my 'wad' I was 14 when I wrote this, back in 94. It wasn't totally complete because it was a work in progress and life caught up to me; I had discovered editors for other games too =) I never thought it would become so well distributed. Thanks again & enjoy. -Dan

^It's an old classic, that's why it's good. Sure these maps aren't up to today's par by any means but for '94 or so these are far better than most.

+2.5 for having some reasonably nice levels, +1 because the previous statement is true in a wad from 1994, and +1 again for being work of a 14-year old!

What's so special about this? Generic maps that are unfunny to play in the first places and I saw many rip-offs (e1m8, e1m9 just to name a few). In short words, boring and unoriginal. Avoid.

Not up to today's standards, but unusually good for it's time. Download it and prepare for a blast in the past

This is a great WAD. All I can say about it is, 5/5, awesome. But why is one of the levels exactly like Doom?? I forgot which one, I think 4 or 5, but it's the same.

Excellent "classic" type Doom game, hardly moded at all, if at all. Gameplay is the best part, and most of the maps I've yet seen are good because of the wide-open spaces and rather straightforward layout (no mazes to get lost in which is nice sometimes). I gave a 5/5 stars.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
