About This File

One map, fully compatible with DooM2.exe, while including as much detail as possible. This map is different from most other maps in that the player progresses differently through the map depending on the skill level. Each skill level "starts" the map at a different location, and some of the traps are skill-level specific. Additionally, the keys and weapons are at different locations for the different skill levels, and there are some areas that are only accessible to specific skill levels. I encourage you to play the map at each of the 3 skill level groups -- 1/2, 3, and 4/5. Note, that while skill levels are incorporated, Skills 1/2 are definitely not for the faint of heart -- in most other maps they would probably play out at Skill 3. Skill 3 is slightly more difficult than Skills 1/2, and Skills 4/5 is slightly more difficult than Skill 3, but none of the skill levels is terribly difficult.

This is probably the most perfectly ammo balanced map ever on HMP. Pretty damn good.

I disliked lone barons in big rooms and the very idea of "minibosses". But "3 different maps depending on skill level" concept was well executed here and I adore the layout: it is so easy for me to get confused despite having played this many times. A huge map. Modern looking techbase, very nice.

Whoever reviewed this in newstuff doesn't know how to review - this map IS NOT too dark and IS NOT underdetailed. One of the best single maps in a long time.

Some parts of this level we're way too dark and the gameplay was pretty frustrating: too many small, oddly connected and shaped rooms thrown together in a haphazard manner. Nice visuals, though. 3/5

This is dated February 2005. You fight 312 baddies in a classic-style level that gets off to a bad start - a mazey dark sewer - but improves considerably once you reach the techbase section, which is huge. It often feels unfinished, with wall sections that look like secrets but are just clashing textures, and I felt that I just stumbled upon the keys. But there are some nice big setpiece battles and the ammo balance is on the right side of tense.

Amazing map. Great interlinking of areas and the detailing really sets the scene without being too over the top. Using the difficulty levels to make three different routes is a stroke of genius. The gameplay is well thought out and certainly no walk in the park! Be prepared to spend over an hour including save/loads, my completion times were 50 minutes too. Easily one of the best wads I've ever played. 5/5 --jj

Very good, if you're looking for shotgun/machinegun/r l/chainsaw action only. (perhaps more powerful weapons are available in the secrets). Maybe a bit too dark in some places. Ammo/health balance is not bad. A bit too much health, ammo is more tight. It's a rather large map with in my eyes enough detail. You won't get lost here. Gameplay kept my interest, I finished this on a second run in 50 minutes. There're no nasty traps. 5/5 coldfusio

Great map, and the skill level specific progression adds to the experience. A must download!

Fun stuff! The level isn't overly detailed but it makes up for it with fun gameplay. Its a pretty easy map, though. Regardless of that, it was fun and deserves a download. 4/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
