A very detailed map. In fact, too detailed -- many locations are visually busy, chaotic, overwhelming. The combats aren't too bad but, even on UV, they feel too easy. Not a terrible level, but I can't see it as Cacoward material.

now this is well-designed techbase. while overdetail tends to be something people bitch about, this level offsets its overdetailing with some mild combat, although a few tricky arch-vile placements and a baron teleporter ambush can make things a bit harder. nothing that really lags, and the level itself is short enough to make the overall experience enjoyable. HeDRoX is quite the gem.

The above 3/5s are right. Linear design, average gameplay, extreme detailing which unfortunately just gets in the way of trying to actually play the game. 3/5

Architecture = Not so good, too linear. Detail = Very very nice. Atmosphere = Quite good. Gameplay = Very meh, not much thought seemed to be put into it. 4/5

Detail is good but I noticed texture misalignments and unrealistic areas (eg the sky ceiling in one room is lower than the normal ceiling in the other room). There is a teleporter that looks very bland, startan2 walls surrounding it. Gameplay was tough of course and you need to use the IDFA cheat to beat this level on the harder skill levels. P.C

I'm totally agree with EvilDoomerHoomer, I think most of the ones who nailed this map only sad A LOT about the detailing... and they still forgot about the other things... Since the autor focused a lot on detail, I also see that focused on enemy placement, spawning of enemies to make the return harder, and a difficulty that might get harder if you don't pay attention.

You don't need to cheat to beat this, it's not very difficult.

Not a terrible map by any means, just extremely short. I guess it looks nice, there is just no challenge here. I beat it in about 10 minutes on UV with no problems at all. I cannot possibly think of another reason to play this wad again. 3/5

A rather subtle release that has received lots of attention. And rightly so, because it's an excellent map. Can't deny good architecture and the map is certainly really hard but I thought the gameplay was okay.

3/5. Average. Detail means nothing if its not backed up by good game play. Sadly it doesn't have good game play.

Not bad; in fact the very first commentator nailed this one on the head. My suggestion for wad authors is that you keep the walls and floor clean, so that players don't get hung up as they dodge, and go wild with ceiling and background detail. Vrack2, for example, would still be entertaining even if it was bare and undetailed.

It's a decent map, but top 10 from 2005...I wouldn't say so. At times it can be frustrating.

Not really much more than an average 3 star techbase map, but the architecture and detailing is something else. Even though it gets in the way sometimes, I think it bumps the overall score up to 4/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
