About This File

You finally get a much needed R&R, after months of 'cleaning up' on Mars. A friend of yours suggested an interesting site on Rigel V, an ancient alien city. As you enter the system you attempt contact for permission to land, but theres no response. You set the coords for landing thinking 'maybe theres interference, after all I'm still not in orbit'. As you descend you still get static, you begin to wonder... The landing pad is empty and theres no sign of life! Somethings definately wrong! No civilian base lets anyone land for free! Just as you touch down you see an awful familiar sight, cacodemons! You see the plasma balls coming at your ship, and you panic. The first thought is if they hit the fuel you're history! Into the teleporter you go, not knowiing where you'll end up, there's no time to be picky... As you rematerialize elsewhere, you hear your ship explode. The blast nearly deafens you, typical of a warp core breach. You can only assume the landing pad is now the newest crater on this world. Now there's no way back, and you've been teleported into a court with possessed troops who are looking for new targets...

Stupid monster spam in very boring green areas (only one room looks interesting) with some inescapable pits. I laughed at some of it but yeah, no need to play this.

No crashes here, but the map is lacklustre. I count 213 monsters, of all types, in an overscaled marble castle. Gameplay is simple: go through rooms, kill monsters, collect keys. That's basically it. Both boss monsters make a guest appearance and there's plenty of hordes to fight but you're ridiculously overstocked so it's nonetheless fairly uninteresting. At one point you need to find an unmarked door to reach the red key and the exit. Two marked but rather pointless secrets. Skip it. --2/5

This is dated September 1994. It's by a man called Don Bates and it's E2M2. You fight 237 baddies, most of which seem to be zombies you kill in the first room by blowing up some barrels... and beyond that I cannot say, because the level consistently crashed GZDoom after a minute or so. So I had a go with PRBoom, and... it crashed that too, after a few more minutes. Bad mojo. It didn't look very good anyway so I don't think we're missing much.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
