About This File

City-themed map, requiring any limit-removing source port. [Tested on ZDooM and jDooM.] Features some fairly intense battles and decent architecture. On Skill 4 you will want to conserve your ammo until you've built up your reserves.

The map is too easy and too empty. Monstercount is really low considering the map's size. I'm not really into detail, but the map just looks bad with all the brown and gray and not much more. Only part worth mentioning is the revenant fight, the rest is a disappointment. 2/5 - Belial.

One of a handful of levels to be named after a novel by forgotten thriller writer Alistair Maclean (of "Where Eagles Dare" fame). This is a very loose translation of the novel. It's a fun, large-scale city-style map. I agree with the early reviewers that it's a bit *too* open - I spent a lot of time bombing around trying to work out where to go next. The cyberdemon fight is a bit token, but apart from that it's a large Doom2-esque wander with a number of fun little mini-levels.

I thought the monstercount was ok (though the lost soul 'trap' after the SSG leaves a lot to be desired), but this map is still nothing inspiring. A lot of the areas are just too large and barren. A bretty boring 3/5

This certainly does not deserve a harsh review. It's a faithful Doom2 open-city themed map with APPROPRIATE monster count. Sure it's a bit open but would you really want a map this big crammed with monsters? This is an excellent example of its theme, dare I say a little reminiscent of Chris Lutz's work. 4/5 - pritch

This is a city map with many large buildings, filled with hordes of monsters. Details are ok (though not overwhelming or too innovative), and especially some lighting effects are looking very nice. The fights are tight and you really should keep an eye onto your ammo. You'll need any single bullet and it's no bad idea to do the demons and weaker monsters with your fists or the saw. A good map which I enjoyed very much. 4.5/5 -Milian

It's a fun city map that, while slightly mazey, is fun to explore. I spent a while looking for the blue key before I realized what I thought was a blue door wasn't, but besides that I totally enjoyed it.

This is a really nice city map. You can feel that the author was inspired when he made this. 5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
