About This File

A set of four levels, which all push the limits of the good ol' vanilla Doom.

If your computer refuses to cooperate with doom2.exe, I recommend Chocolate Doom: http://chocolate-doom.sourceforge.net/

Has also been tested and found functional on ZDoom. Other ports may or may not break some effects. I really don't recommend playing this on a 3D-accelerated port.

Easily one of the best wads on Doomworld. I don't think I need to explain why.

This four level mini-episode is a classic as much as many great megawads, so that alone tells you it must be splendid. Indeed it is! RIP Espi, you will be missed but you'll not be forgotten!

A fantastic mapset, set in a beautiful, detailed, interconnected base. The maps are enormous, so playing through them will become an exploration mission. The visuals leaves one drooling, and gameplay is well-balanced. Difficulty is in the easy/medium range, aside from a few tough spots. New, okay sounds. Excellent new textures, used to great effect. Ingenious secrets. Highly recommended. --5/5

Now THIS is how you do secrets. Fun and infuriating, but never too frustrating. Good challenge on HMP, but not too much. Perfect health item placement. May seem a bit 'over' detailed, but the detailing is of the highest quality - not a single misaligned texture spotted in my playthrough. Like most wads with maps of this size, the automap is a complete mess and almost useless, but that's standard. 5/5

Oh for heaven's sake, this wad was regarded as one of the best ever made at the time of its release. If you had been part of the community then, you would know that. Fine if you don't think it is so good as most other people do, but don't post nonsense. 5/5

Just played this for the first time, and it's pretty dang good. The texture use is very good and sets the mood well, and the progression within the first level alone is pleasantly challenging. This is an excellent WAD. That said, it's a bit easy to get turned around during the third level with all the little passageways and loops.

With so much detail put in these 4 levels, it's hard to believe it's a doom2 compatible levelset. I played in gzdoom and I enjoyed it, though I imagine the ammo-limited gameplay isn't to everyone's taste, but I loved it. It's kinda like classic-but-improved dooming. Oh yeah, and the maps are big with complex progression, so you'll see that 4 maps are just about enough, more of the same style would be a bit much. 5 stars. -TeH NeXuS

Wow! It's not often that you'll come across such perfectly made wads as this set. Monster / ammo / health / game play, all 10 out of 10. AND it plays on plain DOOM. Definitely NOT a wad you play and throw away. Excellent work Epsi. My only regret is that I can only give you 5 stars... 5/5

Pretty righteous. Map03 in particular is a nice combat. As much as we all love massive Hell Revealed-style oh-boy-another-100-r ockets battles, this is another nice reminder of what led us all to fall in love with Doom in the first place: simple room-to-room fights ("You're at 2% health and 0% armor. Can you take out that last schmuck with the pistol so you can get one more stimpack?"). I've been playing Doom since it was new, and I still never tire of this stuff... never for very long, anyway

The architecture resembles something out of a Boom map from 2001 or 2002, but this somehow runs in regular Doom. Not being a vanilla fanatic I ran it in GZDoom anyway. The gameplay is excellent, with single shotgun and chaingun most of the way, and SSG only near the end. Not very difficult, but fast, tactical, and fun. GZDoom usually displays software rendering hacks correctly despite being GL, but I did notice one HOM in map03. The new textures are nothing short of stunning. 5/5 --Woolie

I like Epsi's new textures, his attention to detail, and his alterations to the pistol, but his overall design aesthetic leaves me wanting more organic structures, more curvature, more flow, less boxiness, less 90 degree angles. 3/5 - cjwright79

This is the definition of a PERFECT mappack. PERFECT. It really doesn't get much better than this. I've played Scythes 1 and 2 and Dark7. Those are easily 5* wads but this wad really stood out to me on it's own. If anyone gives this less than a 5/5 than you should not be playing doom. The detail is one of a kind. The fights were perfectly set out, fair, keep you tense around every corner, and reward you for being ammo savvy but don't starve you for ammo. You are a genius and will be greatly missed. 5*

An impressive piece of work. I had a blast playing this on Ultra-Violence. The levels look very detailed, there's a really nice balance between exploration and shooting down monsters, and the new sounds are cool. I was stuck for a little while on MAP03 but i managed to get through it. LEGENDARY

This was great. I prefer Back 2 Basics though. Learn to press TAB if you get lost, use the map markers and a port that shows the door colors. 5/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
