The texturing and detailing looks incredible and the general map design is good, but unfortunately this is all hampered by how cramped it is. All the detailing makes you constantly get stuck or otherwise not move how you wanted to, which is very unfun and frustrating.

Brilliant. I would like if the more recent maps from this mapper offered some variety in style. This one is slightly different than all the newer ones.

Amazing details and lightning, nice dejavu at the end of the second level. Although a bit confusing and dark. I got the blue key at the first level by idcliping. I still have no idea what I should do there.. ;P

No words can describe how brilliant this map is. This is what Doom 3 should have been, I just walked around in awe. Best WAD ever would be a tie between this and Deadall's Remain1. The Blue Key puzzle was obvious, pay attention! Eleventy billion out of 5.

This map is very detailed and I would like to give the author a thumbs up for the amount of time put into this level. I guess I have played more fun wads than this, but this is a very good map. Everything works and looks very well. 3/5/07

I highly recommend these 2 beautiful and playable maps, unless you hate brownness in your levels. Detailing is top notch, and the atmosfere is quite immersive, plus the I like how the author payed attention to gameplay, so it's not all bluff no substance, like some other highly polished maps we've witnessed. 5 Stars. -TeH NeXuS

wow so much GREAT detail. i can't even begin to imagine how much time and effort must have been put into this one. I really enjoyed the first map (kept dying in the second one). But how do you get the blue key? I even read the clues in the txt file but still I have no idea. Anyway, great work! 5/5

Problem with blue key is pain in the ass, for sure - player spend lots of time trying to figure out how to get the bogus key. It's realize instantly, that the real key is somewhere else. Besides of it, supercool maps. Nice industrial design a bit on the vrackish side. And I love second level, albeit short, has spaceship and all the switches needed to power it up and take off. Awesome stuff, I especially liked the ending. But like the previous poster, I haven't been able to get the blue key without cheating. Maybe it's a bug? Still - 5/5

Great and beautiful maps, and even some gameplay flaws don't stop me giving this 5/5. The blue key thing in map01 shows poor judgement. It's not a bug, and you can get the blue key, but I imagine it will frustrate most players and spoil the experience for them (hint: there are two blue keys - use the automap). Also, map02 is presumably not designed to be played from a pistol start, and in any case has too little health to be much fun. A tweaked rerelease would make this truly great.

This is awesome. Skill 2 is unfinishable without cheats though, because there is no red key...at least, not that I could find. Regardless, 4/5.

What a great set of 2 maps! I just simply cannot believe how much effort the mappers sometimes put in the architecture of their levels. These two levels are amazingly atmosferic and minuciously detailed, and the gameplay is quite good as well!5 stars

Ok, I finally found the (second) blue key. (Hint: It can be found in an area being located in an earlier part of the map, looking similar to the one where you had to lower the red cylinders to be shown the first blue key.) IMO the idea behind this puzzle should've been made more clear, the poor optical presentation makes it somewhat illogical.

You have a true talent for mapping, so you really need to start editing out some of the more annoying aspects of your mapping whilst keeping the puzzle element intact. Remember, it should always be fair and fairly obvious - the doom way! It shouldn't be about guessing. But good stuff - pritch

Masterpiece!!! 5/5 (the blu key is not so difficult to find: use the brain, and you will find it easely)

From the author of these maps: thank you very much for your comments! blue key - I didn't expect that it is not easy to get it, sorry. The hints given now should eliminate that problem. red key skill 2 - there is a red key, maybe that a death imp is lying on it. You have to switch the red buttons on the comp-pult to get it. I gave myself 4 points to keep the average voiting. I would appreciate any suggestions per email to improve the maps. Thanks again. didy

Very good, big and detailed and just hard enough. The 'power reaction' with the illuminated grey corridor was very nice, and it reminded me of something from the first "System Shock" game. I spotted a bug though, in the first episode; I had the yellow key, but went right back to the start to see if I could find anything new, and then the door to the main complex wouldn't open and let me back in. As for the blue key, you could put a sign above it saying "security camera" or something.

Great job. Shame about the blue key on map 1 though. I looked up and thought that looks vaguely like a projector. I ended up (after 20 mins) using iddt to check for a second key which I subsequently found (thanks to prboom+ map colors). This would've been easier if the 2nd blue card area was hidden until the projector was switched on. Then it would be obvious where to go looking at the automap. Still 5/5 from me.

Unlike some of the above reviewers, I don't think the gameplay in this WAD is very good; the level is in many places too dark and cramped, and monster placement is uninspired. On the other hand, the architecture and detailing are nicely done and above all the atmosphere is excellent. It reminded me in a nostalgic way of my early days of Dooming. I liked the fact that the place isn't crawling with monsters, it enhanced the creepiness of the level. All in all, this is one of the best maps of this year. 5/5

This wad is the best thing I've played in a very long while as far as non-megawad stuff goes. One of the few wads that stray from classic Doom map design and still remain absolutely perfect. The detailing is great, the few cramped places don't hurt the gameplay. The blue key 'issue' is bullshit, as the hint is makes it obvious where the key is. 5/5 - Belial

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
