DANTE'S GATE version 1.666

About This File

This is the third revision of DANTE'S GATE, and it accommodates a peculiar bug in the Doom 1.666 engine which does not allow multiple sector tagging for raised floors. I just barely caught this and had to redo a couple of sectors which raised fine in 1.2 through 1.5b, but not in 1.666. I've also taken advantage of some of the new LineDef and Sector tags for Fast Doors and Lifts. This version is fully compatible with Doom 1.666.

For the most part, the only "theme" I had in mind was to make the level as aesthetically pleasing and consistent as possible. In other words, I wanted it to look neat. There are lots of little nooks and crannies scattered about, and (I hope) a few surprises. Here is the storyline, if you want one:

After all this wackiness at the UAC base, you have lost track of your lady-friend, BEATRICE. How the two of you ever got separated is no great mystery, what with all these demons and devils running about, but you're damned if you're going to go through Hell for nothing. The only other survivor besides yourself and Beatrice is VIRGIL, the beatnik space poet. He last saw Beatrice by one of the warp-gates. Chances are she made it through -- but what's on the other side?

Only one way to find out. You'll have to go through DANTE'S GATE.

Please let me know what you think by E-Mail.

Enjoy.

One of the first Max Doom maps I ever played.  Pretty damn good.

Legendary!! It belongs to the legend of Doom, and it's quite surely one of the most well known wad for Doom 1. Plus, John W. Anderson deserve to be applauded for his numerous gifts made to the Doom Community. Less than 4 stars is just a shame - 5/5 - Jive

A legendary wad from 1994 that's...dated. Archeron stood the test of time, but this didn't. Play the Doom 2 version instead: it fixes the texturing problems and adds a lot more new stuff. 3.5/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
