Doom Noir

About This File

This is just a PLAYPAL/COLORMAP replacement that changes DOOM into a *mostly* black and white game. The red range is left as-is.

I originally put this together back in the late nineties and it languished on my hard drive afterwards. Sometime recently, I think it was the film "Sin City" that reminded me of this.

I looked around and there is another B&W PWAD called "ww-nfoir.wad". However it doesn't leave the red range alone: That's made B&W too.

I also threw in some new BSPLAT sprites taken from "gib.wad"; another PWAD sitting on my HD.

Gotten this from some Zdaemon server, quite epic. Will use this to make RSKY1 Black and white.

interesting combination bw and red (like infrascanner), but bw gamma conversion far from good quality - just run doom2@m01 and look on ceiling from player start point

It's a pretty interesting palette wad. At least it doesn't turn Doom into a gigantic eyesore like EGA Doom.

I love this WAD as it is. The only thing that's holding me back from a 5/5 is the keycard issue - the only keycard colours are red and grey. This is a problem; as the yellow and blue keycards wind up looking the same.

Feels like you're in a old 1940's movie. I like it.

Pretty neat though. Best "film noir" pallette so far, as it was a good idea to leave the red range as it is.

it was cool, the red contrasting with the grayscale kinda gave the "homicidal maniac" feel, and also i agree witht the peoples down below i have seen quite a few film noir pallettes and my eyesight kinda went weird after playing it....

This is at least the 3rd time I see a "film noir" pallette. Meh.

Well, it actually works quite well, although after five minutes the effect wore off and my brain started to see the game in colour again. The only minor issue is that it becomes slightly hard to tell apart the barons and the knights, but apart from that it's stylish as could be given the engine.

I like it. Really good Noir palette. It looks odd in some places, but the red color makes it all the more epic looking. 4* - Preliatus

... and it's tricky to tell apart the invulnerability, soul sphere and megasphere if you're in a hurry.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
