About This File

A moderately-sized techbase heavily inspired by Ultimate Doom episode 2 (especially Deimos Lab). The difficulty is easy/medium, and is a 5-10 minute play. This is designed for single player, but functions well in cooperative too.

As this is my first release, the map is a bit underdetailed, and was originally completed in May 2005. I made a few changes to it before uploading, but these were mostly cosmetic (light values, textures) so as to keep the 'first map' feel.

Pretty cool first time map, good layout pretty reminiscent of original episode 2, good puzzles section, nice simple detailing. Bad points are a inescapable pit in the large nukage room you see in the first screenshot above and some really badly misaligned walls. Anyway, really cool map, crashes when you save the game on vanilla doom exe.

A fun, small level that could have used a tinge more health and ammo. Baron encounters in the nukage room with catwalks weren't too fun to deal with.

This is from 2006 but sticks to the style of the original Doom 1 maps with a rather low level of detail. The challenge is ok, but not too hard. However, the whole map is a bit of a switch hunt. 2.5/5 -Milian

Oldschool bringing back memories/resemblance s from doom1 maps. Quite nice and fun to play! 4/5 - Optimus

This is a decent but dull tribute to E2, with some themes taken from different levels in the series, although it's much darker. Unfortunately it straddles the gap that separates modern-day tributes from genuinely old levels; this feels like a competent level from 1994 rather than a retro level from 2005. The gameplay is nothing special and some of the design work is actually less advanced than the original E2.

this is underrated, it is an excellent map for notstalagia hunters, and i wouldn't throw any glaring nos for others either

This deserves more a 4 than a 3, I thought. I only have two complaints. First is that the switches in the "slime spiral" area behind the blue door are connected to a door too far away. Second is that the map ends VERY abruptly. I mean, no big boss fight, no elevator door, no exit sign, nothing - there's even a (fake) other door in the prior room - you have absolutely zero idea that it's over. But a good E2 style level overall.

Great job. I loved all of the different sections. They just added to the feel of the level. 4/5 :)

A pretty nice map overall. The E2 feeling was great, and the map was fun to play. Gets a 3.5/5 from me, but since I can't exactly do that, I'll go with 4. =) -Tango

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
