NJ Doom2

About This File

Olde replacement for Doom2. Released purely because of interest in old, cheesy 1994 WADS.

This is not the first version of this file. It may be based on an early revision but this one has been "legalised" by removing maps 31 and 32 which were just edited version of the Id originals to make them a little more like the Wolf originals.

It is likely that this is not even based on the original version of NJDoom but an early revision.

The file date indicated a December 1994 release which may or may not be accurate. This file was originally uploaded to the Compuserve action games forum in 1994.

P41R47 says all I could possibly say about this wad. Legendary stuff. I’m taking off a star because there are numerous (very minor) design issues throughout the wad, but nothing that prevents it from being played to completion and certainly nothing that prevents it from being an excellent time. Absolutely worth it if you still enjoy old style mapping about on par with the Doom1/Doom2 iwads!

Gilgamesh is an epic poem, the most ancient epic poems that reached our days.
Engraved on stone slabs and suffering for eons until discovered, this poem is the basis for all the literature to come.
Amazing voyages? Check!

Epic battles? Check!

Gods meddling with humanity? Check!

Humanity defying the gods on the search for eternity? Check!

All the topics of the humanity are reduced to this 12 stone tablets.

Well, NJ (Enjay) Doom2, might be the very first complete megawad by a sole author.

And it shows a lot of the things that will be exploited with greater effects on later works.

Sector models (Doomcute)? Check!
Hints of storytelling? Check!

Chaingunners traps? Check!

Very big open rooms full of hitscanners? Check!

Lots and lots of enemies and strafe dancing for mob controll? Check!

Continuty between maps (end of one, start of the next)? Check!

Well use of the resource for atmospheric and story elements? Check!

So yeah, really much appreciated and a neat piece of history that also plays pretty well for being one of the first (if not the first for Doom2) megawads.

Thanks, Enjay for this enlightening work!

This is just a conversion of njdoom1. WE NEED MORE ORIGINAL MAPS AND LESS REMAKES/CONVERSIONS! 0/5

I still drag these out and play them occasionally. Old as dirt but they've held up really well. The Long Run was the first of its kind. NJ maps remain among my long-term favorites.

^Can't author's conversion be pointless? This wad is because has nothing more than original megawad.

Pretty good stuff. A touch easy in some places and a couple of bugs here and there. Otherwise a worthwhile download.

Possibly the first (nearly) full Doom2 megawad. Lots of good maps in here too - on replaying it, I remember many of the maps fondly, and with some surprise, as it turns out that a lot of memorable ideas are packed within this wad.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
