About This File

A huge wad (200K) with new E1M1 music (a distorted version of the original) and lots of weird stuff. A few secrets, some of which are very helpful, and well, you'll find out for yourself.

Not as bad as all that... The rudiments of gameplay are there and clearly the author has some aesthetic sense - the BROWNPIP section just before the exit is even stylish, altho it's empty for some reason... With a texture revamp and rebuilt nodes this could be a decent map... 2/5

Dire even for June 1994. With the amount of visual glitches caused by bad nodes this should have never been released.

This is a very old level from December 1994. Based on the power-ups at the beginning, I assume it dates from the time when you could have more than 200% armour. It's not the best level I have seen. It gets off to a very poor start with a big crushing room filled with spider masterminds; it looks awful, pure 1994. Then you go through some teleporters, firing off an immense quantity of rockets and BFG ammo, and it's just a big angular maze. Bah.

Good: You can reach the exit, thus allowing you to escape this disaster of level design. Bad: This level exists. Overall: When there's so many HOM errors that you can't tell what's a hallway and what's a wall, there's a problem with your level. Abysmal. 0/5 -VV

Owen, you need to spend a little more time on wad building and not polishing your teeth! This is a very low quality level, misaligned textures, mad scrolling walls, whole room crushers... not even worth the download to test it. I'm now off to commit suicide after having witnessed this atrocity. 0/5

Full of glitches and poor design, but it is at least playable in its intended exe (even if not in some modern ports). Gameplay isn't too bad, and if the glitches werew fixed, I'd even say it's worth playing.

You say this is your first wad yet you list two others - do you even know what your talking about? You definately don't know how to construct a decent level (even 1994 standard) 0/5 -jb

I've seen things in junkyards that are less broken than this.

After seeing a video of this, I can safely say this deserves 0/5.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
