The Spire 2: Celestial, The Sky Torn Asunder

About This File

REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT NOTES YOU NEED TO READ!!! - You need GOTHICTX.WAD to run this map! Links to download it are at the end of the text file. - This map is ENORMOUS. If you have anything less than a 1Ghz processor, don't even bother. - This is probably the hardest map ever made that isn't nuts.wad, with well over 3000 monsters on UV. That being said, I would highly recommend HMP difficulty for most players, as that is more equal to normal UV difficulties.

Since the original "The Spire" did not, oddly enough, feature spires of any sort, Celestial takes place in and outside of an enormous tower. The map is quite non-linear, check your automap if you get lost. Also keep in mind: ALL KEYS ARE DIFFERENT! That means blue keycard is NOT the same as blue skullkey, etc.

Feedback is appreciated!

Very fun and hard map. No performance issue with GZDoom. 5/5

Typical Mike Reid Map, excessive ammo, big guns early but a little more enemies than usual. Of all his maps, I find this to be his weakest effort and thats a lot for the author of the legendary Hoover Dam. Thats not to say it isnt good but he has done way better. Still 4/5 though.

Even with 3Ghz CPU and HD3850 this map chugs. Gameplay is good in the spots where it's smooth, otherwise unplayable. Plus, I hate any map that sticks you in an open area with a far-off Revenant you can hardly see. 1/5

A very big map, but also very flawed. The constructs are huge, but rather bland. The gameplay is also a simple keyhunt, with thousands of monsters assaulting you. 3/5 for the effort though.

Demos should be included with maps like this. It's just common courtesy.

Even bigger than the previous Spire by this author, this is like a game by itself.

DOOM maps can be great and only require 4 mb of ram. Avoid this one. -Vegeta

A year has passed, and I have a machine fast enough to play this. I had to ditch my 386. This is a huge level with over 3,000 monsters. It's better with a source port that lets you look up and down. The level emphasises scale rather than gameplay, and it's a bit of a slog to play; it revolves around luring monsters into chokepoints and blasting 'em. My abiding memory is of firing masses of rockets at groups of baddies and then running back to find more rockets.

It's huge and it has tons of monsters. However there is hardly anything else positive to say about this map. There's all sorts of problems with the gameplay, but mostly it's just a boring slog through an overscaled and underdetailed landscape. It definitely isn't the hardest map ever like the author claims. Still, epic is good and there's a few good fights, so 3 stars from me.

Epic scaled architecture and some great battles (the caco-horde near the beginning and the end-battle where you mop up 1500 monsters with bfg only). Only downside is there is too much ammo/health, and you need a decent pc(the begining is a bit laggy, later on it´s ok. 5/5

The framerate kills it at the beginning but later it plays greatly, preety huge, great detailed worlds and extreme fights. 5/5 - Optimus

the detail is great, the gameplay is tight, but the framerate issue completely ruins it. next time make a zdoom wad and use a skybox to get that spire affect.

Fantastic Beethoven's Ninth Symphony of a map from prower. A good balance of weapons/monsters, maybe a bit too much health, but just epic overall. 2 hours of pleasure. Let's have fewer gimmicks in mapping and more of this new take on classic doom please. 5 stars. - pritch

"Typical Mike Reid Map, excessive ammo, big guns early but a little more enemies than usual. Of all his maps, I find this to be his weakest effort and thats a lot for the author of the legendary Hoover Dam." That's Michael Reed, not Michael Reid. Anyways this map is ridiculous.

When compared to other wads of this nature, such as Vae Victa and Deus Vult, this WAD stacks up pretty well with those mapsets, though you wait FAR too long to get your hands on the ordinance to deal with the over 3000 monsters present in this level, which is the only real downside. That and the lack of health which made me use cheat codes after only a few minutes worth of playing. 4 stars for a job well done overall

Loved it! And the framerate is perfectly fine in GZDoom at least, even for that huge last fight.

Hmm. The frame rate is tolerable with GZDoom, although it's still choppy and I'm sure there must have been a better way. The gameplay isn't bad, but by christ I was pissed off with those distant sniping imps (the newstuff review mentions this). It's tricky enough without being killed by a rain of fireballs coming from half-way over the map. It's Very impressive to look at, though.

Good example of how not to make a map. NORMAL PEOPLE DO NOT STUFF 32K SIDEDEFS IN VIEW AT ONCE. 2 stars for the parts that actually were tolerable.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
