About This File

The second map I've made for Doom. The first one you can download above. This level was actually designed on paper at work during the making of my first level back in December 2002. This is what I remember from it and is pretty similar to the design I think. There is only one skill level in this so bad players will probably find it difficult and good players might find it easy. I find it challenging.

If I do another level, it will be better than this. I've learned a lot since switching to Doombuilder and think I'll do a better job at designing it on paper, because I think I can pretty much create anything in the editor itself... It's just a case of getting all the ideas on paper first, because when you edit it, you're pretty much committed from then, even if it's not great.

7-minutes simple castle map. Not bad, not good, a bit amateurish but with some nice details, and gameplay @ UV is not difficult, so overall about mediocre. Play it when you have a few minutes left during lunch time. BTW Contains a few HOMs around one of the towers.

Medium-sized linear castle, basic design but looks alright. Decent action and of course there is a cyberdemon showdown at the end. One cacodemon never teleported to me but the other one did so I guess 100% kills is possible?

some parts are nice, some could need much more work (lighting and design), gameplay is quite good, still 3/5

Gameplaywise, this map is a thrill. Short, but quite challenging and rough. And, yes, it still gives me surges of adrenalin when a Cyberdemon is following me wherever I go. As to the ambience (which is a castle), it's not too elaborated and detailed but good enough for such a small map. 4/5 -Milian

This is a castle level; it's better than the 1994-95 castle levels, but it feels very old-fashioned. The design is no more advanced, but there are more, and tougher monsters. There's also a cyberdemon, but you have a BFG and plenty enough ammo to deal with it. After that you get a handful of weaker monsters as an odd coda, but they're no trouble. The rest of the map is anonymous - there are only two main areas (the main hall and its annexes, plus a garden) and they're unexceptional.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
