About This File

An extremely non-linear adventure/puzzle-centric set of levels for ZDoom. Theme is mostly E1-inspired, though it's been warped quite a bit since we started. This wad is certainly not for everyone, but having put so much work into it, I'm hoping that it gets enjoyed by as many people as possible.

Also I must apologize for the earlier releases of this wad. Apparently there was an uncaught bug in our compilation process that was overwriting MAP01 with a single-sector map. Should be fixed now...

This is an awesome Wad. I have found five of the special items but I am stuck though. It appears there is a broken exit on map 16. When I walk over the teleporter, it doesn't work. It's really annoying. Good Wad though.

Now this is what phobas island should be, but with more damn action! I hate the part that if I revisit the map, i lose all my shit. I hate that there's a lack of ammo, but I know that it's more of an exploration map, not an action map. Good as a Myst thing, but come on dude, doom it or just stretch out that creativity box! ~1/5

This WAD definitely takes some patience to play through (I spent 15 minutes running around the first level before I realized I had to *jump in the moat*), and it starts getting more interesting after the second level. I'm up to the 4th one now...they keep getting better and better. I definitely have to give this WAD credit for being absolutely EPIC in scope. I wonder if I'll be able to finish it. :O

This is orgasmic. I love it. I just love open-ended levels. Period. 5/5 - xXx

This is dated July 2006. It's hard to review; the levels are huge, labyrinthine, mostly empty, with detailing that's vintage 1995. The fights are unspectacular, although there's a dearth of health initially. Gameplay is such that you can often exit the level leaving half of it untouched; despite the tedious scouring for keys I enjoyed it as a kind of ambient adventure experience. In most respects its a disaster although I'm glad it exists.

This WAD is totally great, and the more patient you are, the more rewarded you become with sweet places. An aid to relieve possible frustration: search thoroughly in the annoying lost soul canyon in level 2.

I like the concept of this wad. It shows much promise. There are several bugs, and switch mazes like the one in map 04 isn't my cup of tea. With a bit more tweaking, this could be a really awesome.

I gave it 5 stars - legendary. Because... because it's just that way. Although I couldn't beat it, I've caught a glimpse at how EPIC it is. I'd even say it in ASCII-art-font: EEEE PPP III CCC EEE P P I C E PPP I C EEEE P III CCC

I liked the concept, but the maps were annoying as hell! At map07 or 08, there was this cave of lava... It took me about 10 mins to browse through it, it was all empty and had no items or monsters or nothing. The maps are all big and 70% of the time empty. If you change the level manually you sometimes land into a sector with monsters that instantly kill you. Other than that there's a couple of maps that were actually cool, like the Windshield map. Other than that, avoid.

This would be a great stuff, but it's still unfinished. WAD contains monsters don't meeting in play. Excellent maps (1-6,9,10,13,16,21,2 2,25 too complex! :( ,26,30) alternate mediocre ones. Open/Close door maze in level 4 is good, but it's not intresting to meet it in another level again. All but yellow scull keys are rather difficult to find, but in reward player gets almost empty uninteresting locations. It's worth to remove all superfluous things.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
