About This File

My second wad. This time around I wanted to learn to use Boom features. It was originally made for Prboom+, and then adjusted for Risen3D and Zdoom. There are no port specific features used beyond Boom. The Story - The other watchtowers are silent, your mounted gun is out of ammo, and another horde of demons is approaching. Those UAC eggheads had to know that making artificial versions of demonic artifacts would attract their attention. You might live if you make it inside the research facility and are able to shut the gate behind you...

A fun, but average map designed around a gimmick. Basically, it uses tons of power up spheres as decorations, hence the name "Balls", and I find it pretty cool, which is why I remembered this map after all the years. But other than its gimmick, it's very average and the level design is rather typical and dull. The monster encounters aren't difficult, but some are really poorly designed, and it has unnecessary cyber fight in the end, which is probably the easiest cyber fight I've seen. Also, some parts of this level are unintuitive, and in one moment you practically need a mouselook to shoot a switch.

By far the most memorable part about this map is its opening: if you don't run exactly where you need the second the elevator stops, you die a very horrible and hilarious death! *rawr*

This gets an instant five stars just for the introduction sequence. I haven't even played the rest of the level but I'll give it five stars just for that bit.

Well, I've played it. The level has some impressive large spaces, and it's entertaining although not very hard; there's a huge amount of health and ammo, and I could pick up some invulnerability spheres (this was perhaps a bug). I was expecting the cyberdemon to warp in at the end for a final battle but he didn't, although he is present in the level. There are a few quirks and the texturing looks crude at times, but the scale is impressive and I was never bored.

The name doesn't make any sense. Well anyway, I personally liked it alot. The music fitted greatly, the athmosphere was great, and the last part was pretty sweet. 4/5 -Moti

Overall, I liked this level. However, I got lost (I believe it was due to a bug since I looked everywhere, it involved the blue door). I will give this a 5 but I think it should get a 4.5/5.

Wow, this might be the most bizzare level I have ever played in my life. However I think it's worth the time to download and play because it does have some pretty cool parts. 3/4/07

The map is a mess and it feels like a jokemap at times. Still, it had some nice spots (especially the beginning), so I'll give it 2 stars.

please stop this wads from 1994 -- Seriously, though. Once you figure out how to get past the demon part, victory becomes trivial. Nice and brutal.

This map is far too bizzare, and has way too many rooms where it's so dark you can't even see the enemies. A gimmick at best.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
