Some maps look quite good but the overall gameplay of this wad is very poor. Not recommended.

This is a wad that starts off poorly in my opinion. The first and second levels, while very pretty, are a bit weird/weak gameplay-wise. That said, stick with this one because it gets really good later on. While much of the focus was on eye-popping detail, the gameplay is actually pretty good in most cases once you understand what the authors were going for. 5/5 stars, legendary.

The visuals are excellent, but the gameplay is more often than not hopeless or just plain absent. Therefore I seriously wonder how many 5* reviewers actually have played this out @ UV. This could have been the mapset of the decade, but it's ruined to the ground. As-is: 5* for ambiance but 0.5* for gameplay = small 2*, and 'it's a pity' is an understatement. BTW If this got a Cacoward, then DoomWorld has turned into a cinema forum :-(.

Okay... this is a really difficult one to rate. Incredibly gorgeous maps, some of the best examples of Duke 3D style of semi-realistic environments in any Doom wad to date. Gameplay on the other hand... it goes from switch/key hunting through this gigantic areas that are almost devoid of enemies, to all out slaughter. In both cases it goes to annoying extremes. Important, impressive wad... just not one that is very fun to play.

Wonderful wads but that last was not finished. To bad, it was great. I hope you are still making wads.

This is one of the most overrated wads in existence. The maps are very gorgeous and I can appreciate the amount of detail was put into and I'm afraid that's where good things end. The gameplay is where this wad fails at. Difficulty is all over place, ranging from very easy to very hard, the latter which lead to frustrating moments of unfair deaths and save scumming to get past a certain area with 10% or less health. The final couple of levels made me rage so hard. 2/5

Contrary to a lot of speculation, these maps are quite good. Some maps don't have that 'classic' flow, and I believe this is the only reason some people don't like the wad. However regardless of the play style, it is important to create maps that are not overly confusing/complicate d (as is illustrated by any commercial game) and I think, in some regards, certain maps border on that threshold. I would suggest making some slightly smaller maps - say, 75% of avg. hellcore map size. 5/5

Beautiful levels. Some fights were tough, but I got through it without too much difficulty. Good job guys.

This is an interesting wad, it has great puzzles and great level design. Unfortunately the gameplay is where this wad fails at, the first levels aren't that bad (map01 was kinda tough for a start) but the final levels (9, 10 and 11; not counting credits level) were WAY TOO FUCKING HARD, there were too many monsters (lots of cyberdemons) and very little dodge room, nearly impossible to avoid. I managed to do without cheating but I died about 100 times in total. I played with AEOD 6.02. -Doomer95

Kudos to Darkfyre and Fusion for the enormous improvement over the disappointing unfinished version. Despite some problems with the flow of the gameplay, this beautiful mapset deserves its 5 stars.

Nothing short of amazing, I loved it! The detail in the maps is insane, creates outstanding atmosphere. The gameplay was extremely fun for me as well, not always quite as high paced as doom usually is, but I liked it. It helps builds suspense and adds to the atmospheric qualities of the maps. I love being absorbed by the "feeling" of the gameplay/maps, instead of just frag festing in non-memorable square rooms... I'm a huge Hellcore fan!

Great Atmospere, details and lovely wide areas, but unfortunately the gameplay was sometimes under average and there are some lags appearences... overall a little worse 4 ;)

Looks are good, but I think some are actually criticizing the play too LITTLE. There are areas w/ few/no monsters and areas w/ too many. This makes the play often range from frustrating and hard to painfully boring and quiet. I don't think I've seen another wad that looks so good, but in which the gameplay is such an awful setback. If only the team would release a new version with FAR better monster placement, then they will have released one of the best wads this year, but for now, very dissapointing.

Don't know what all the whining's about. Gameplay's fast hard and fun, when it's quiet I'm almost fearful about when it's about to erupt again! Very fun and very well designed wad.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
