Nostalgia series: 1994 base

About This File

This is the first map of a serious series. I want to make some tributes to all styles of mapping. I made this level according to 1994 canons such as low detail and only a weapon available (shotgun). In a secret cave I wrote the name of the best (in my humble opinion) wads made in 1994 that changed my lifestyle. The numbers in brackets are the "id" at /idgames.

there are better maps from the "1994 mapping era" than this godawful crap. 0/5

Pretty minimal, true to its name. Play at 320*200 or with Chocolate doom at low detail for maximum 1994-ness.

To the above reviewer: except that it is broken due to Zdoomisms. A new port category is needed: "Zdoomism-compatibl e".

Well, it tries to imitate those 1994 wads, and IMHO it succeeds. The secret cave with the best maps of that year is a nice detail... Better than the Gamarra series. --- 2/5

Better than "gamarras" piece of crap, but still a horrible piece of crap. Giulio, spero che ti metta a fare delle mappe migliori col passare del tempo, sennò vengo lì e poi... "schiaffi ke sono un ppppiacere aiòòòòòò pòrcatròia!!!!" - Daimon

Good map in a perfect 1994 spirit. Ammo isn't enough but i don't care.

Just because you say it's supposed to look like a "1994 map" doesn't give you the right to put in zero effort in making a map. Fail.

This is a Gamarra like map. 1 star because this map dosen't have enough ammo or health. The Gameplay is shocking, if ammo or health placement was fixed I would have given it a 3. -PC

What you'd expect. Huge bare open spaces, 255 lighting, Knee Deep in the Fucking Ugly texture scheme, very easy. But the gameplay is unique in that it is Dull with a capital D. I was sick of this map after pistoling and then punching around 15 imps, zombies, and demons with no shotgun. And the end battle against 40 or so imps, demons, and cacos is an attempt at HR gameplay that is so tedious and so easy that the real danger is narcolepsy. And requiring ZDoom for this is fucking lame. 1/5 --Woolie

You pretty much summed up why this map sucks. "Low detail and only a weapon available" It's almost as bad as your Gamarra maps.

Wads from 1994 don't have errors like these. It's a good idea to learn the basics before you start releasing maps.

Not horrible but not that too good either. Definately an improvement over Gamarra.

In the spirit of 1994, I shall rate this low.

Cool! Ammo was tight but I went through it nicely. Found the 1994 secret with more recommendations for what to play today :) 4/5 - Optimus

Eh, what were you expecting. In an effort to make a 1994 style map, you map in a less than perfect fashion. Plus, the first doom mod ever was the same way...one gun, not enough ammo. I'm for ya, glassyman. 3starz

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
