Great fun, and manly stuff. Harder than Chuck Norris. Captures the ambience of the original. It's a good argument for upgrading to a fast 486.

Amazing map that retains all that was great from the original map29 (which, incidentally is probably my favorite doom from the original 2). Its very hard and challenging and the visuals are some of the best I have ever seen in a doom map and its boom compatible. Definitely worth the download to play, 5/5

An incredible level that is almost ruined by the unfair difficulty. This is coming from a veteran DOOMer who has been playing since 1994 - I don't suck. I had to save-scum throughout the entire map. Most battles involved more luck or foreknowledge than skill. 4/5 stars, mostly for the excellent design and architecture.

in response to the txt file - jumping is not for losers. if your map is designed for no jumping then that's fine but bashing jumping in general just shows how ignorant you are. learn to be a skilled rocket jumper and then try to tell me jumping is for losers. you won't, because if you were a skilled rocket jumper you'll be like "wow this is so cool"

Professional looking map and harder than hell. This level will stay on my hard drive forever. Beautiful detailing all over the place and just a good design make this one of the best levels I have ever played. I ran out of ammo at you point but about 5 minutes later I had more than I could carry thanks to an Arch Vile. I found a good secret to find that I really needed so that was cool. Keep making levels as kick ass as this and I'll be happy. 8/16/07

5 out of 5 all the way. words cant express. this level feels more like it was dreamed up. I loved the lighting and the secrets that were also traps like where the soul sphere is. (nose trouble will get you every time, look out for the revenant ;)

... Thanx to the testers too... Had to play this (after 20 runs on UV) on HMP. For me this doesn't only like level 29. I remember now how difficulty I had playing map 29 (and map28) long time ago. But it wasn't and this isn't frustating for me, it's fun. On the wip pages he compares it with decade but not as cool. For me this play and looks just a little bit better. 5/5 coldfusio.

Somehow I've beaten this. At the end I had 3% of health and wet pants. 5 stars.

This is dated June 2007. It's a much harder, more detailed update of Map29, which was pretty hard and detailed at the time; this has the same basic layout and traps but magnified. It's a bit unfair at times, although you can often just flee the big battles. The scale is grand. Against it there's a surprising and unwelcome paucity of ammo, not helped by the hoardes of lost souls, and the design is almost too fiddly and baroque at times. But it's still excellent.

Gameplay often revolves around being able to fight on narrow ledges and tight spaces; I appreciated the remarkable fairness with the secrets: arriving at the end, they're shown on the automap, no running around for hours. Don't be put off by the start, once you're through that, it settles down a little. 4/5

Great map and the best MAP29 style level I've seen so far. Looks are far better than the original MAP29 while same gameplay style (which I personally was a fan of) is retained. To the above reviewer, I don't think this is Lutz's best wad so far - I definantly would say PAR is better because the map quality is definantly as good as this, plus it has 9 maps rather than 1 and is completely original. Still a great wad and I hope for even more wads from Lutz in the future. 5/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
