About This File

This wad replaces episode1 of the ultimate doom. And just for it to be clear: These are very oldscoolish wads with decent 1994 detail. They have nothing new in terms of gameplay. And The hole episode ONLY uses 4 monsters ruling out the barons in the last level. If you don't like it, whine about it.

Needs sprucing up. Texture alignment, more secrets, etc. This, indeed, reminds me of 1994. It reminds me of the CDs that were released around the time with 1000's of mediocre (or worse) levels on it, but with only a few good ones.

OK... h_g obviously got something right when making this episode replacement. It's a bit plain and unpolished visually, but at least it's playable. I must say I didn't expect that much out of him, but perhaps I was too biased. Well, I think a 3/5 is the perfect rating, and I hope his future releases only get better. -Maes

Not bad. It has a real 1994 feel; the levels look hand-drawn. I am unconvinced that this is deliberate, but the gameplay moves quickly, the levels take very little time to finish, and it never gets boring. E1M5 is very reminiscent of original E1M5. There's no E1M9 replacement. E1M8 has a curious ending; it's either a crap final battle, or a botched "you are supposed to die" thing. Little dutch cap is a minimum effort, police man mother.

The real strength of this episode is the Gameplay. The level design could be better and more realistic but the wad does a good job recreating 1994. 3 Stars -PC

Not really, but many of the textures are unaligned. 3/5 stars for a ok wad that played well.

Yes, nice oldschool fun with unpolished design. Wrong texture alignment hurts me, so fix this in your next levels as much as you can, but it was nice for a start. 3/5 - Optimus

It does feel somewhat like something from 1994. There were some problems, though. Mainly that the fights are generally predictable and easy, and that there are texture issues, perhaps because it was not properly tested with Doom, Chocolate Doom, or Doom95. [2/5] ~Chain Mail (08/2007)

As Optimus said, oldschool and unpolished, pretty much no thought given to texture alignment. These maps start out okay with some nice original fights. The later half of the episode however falls into the trap of using re-implementations of original mapping ideas, and it's too goddamn dark. I'd have rathered 4 good maps than forcing out an extra 4 just to make an episode. 2/5

Hey, this wasn't bad at all! It felt like a good 1994 release, and the whole thing is quick (you can make it through in like 20 minutes) and not frustrating. A touch underrated IMO. 3.5/5

VERY 1994-ish, in a good way. nice, quick and simple gameplay. if you actually played wads in '94 then you'd know that if this were released back then it would have been considered very good despite the few classics that remain from those times...even if the effort seems to ramp down after the first few maps and there is just a bit too much similarity between it and obvious ID maps. still, ***

Great 1994 retro feel, even if the maps are a bit short - if you were a fan back in the day you will enjoy this - if you demand 10,000 sectors in every map you won't - oh, and GZSoom seems to fix the texture alignment issues

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
