About This File

One map - a large map! I devote this wad to KoLoBoK[iddqd], my best friend, who suddenly died in 2007, may 12.

I really liked this. The atmosphere was on point, and the fights were challenging but fair. Got a real sense of accomplishment at the end walk-back  to the exit; a nice touch. In fact, I liked this so much that after multiple playthroughs,  I decided to tackle it with hideous destructor (gruesome difficulty). Tough but doable (with the exception of the archviles. They still gives me chills). Speaking of, if you are planning on playing this with hideous destructor, the cardkey cutscene was broken for me, so I just got to it and gave it to myself with console. Other than that, good stuff.

A cool level with a lot of atmosphere and good use of ZDoom features. The dark basement is especially memorable, being one of the creepiest experiences I've had in Doom. Some of the scenes and vistas are truly excellent. The ammo/health balance is good, although it's definitely not an easy map and you'll have to fight for your survival. One unpleasant surprise was running out of ammo while fighting the final boss; I was forced to cheat because there were no ammo pickups around. On the whole, I enjoyed this thoroughly.

Very nice level with great architecture & detail throughout and a fair progression difficulty wise. The choice of lights and music really give the level a nice ambiance too. Gameplay isn't perfect, but everything else just oozes quality. Absolutely worth playing.

Solid piece of work, and clearly a predecessor of ROCH. Pros: good layout, excellent detailing, great ambiance, technically solid. Cons: often way too dark, too much repetition in subscenes & choosen monsters, gameplay @ UV way too often too 1-dimensional and repetitive, so predictable. Also some fights look like a torture, f.e. the cage with the cacos and the hidden (automap) maze fight with the moving walls. 5* for a very atmospheric adventure and 3* for gameplay makes overall 4*.

I really liked the ideas behing this map. The english could have been better and there were some lazyness all around in small details, as well as a lack of ammo and items that made gameplay boring and tedious towards the end. Other than that, great mapping and use of custom resources, although i'm a little tired of seeing the same satyrs and shadows.

Beautiful looking map with great dark atmosphere. Makes very good use of the KDIZD monsters, even improves the satyrs so they aren't completely useless. The only thing i didn't like about the map was the somewhat excessive switch hunts in places, but nevertheless i'm giving this 5/5

One of the best GZDoom maps I've ever played. The music is really great at adding atmosphere to the map, and the invisble floors really sum it up. It's also nice to have friendly marines helping out :) 5/5 -r_rr.

A great map with outstanding use of visuals and lighting. I would have prefered to have seen the map divided into several smaller maps, which aside from the obvious bonus of reducing player fatigue and giving the player a better idea of how far they are, would also provide incentive to vary the gameplay up a bit more. I simply loved the prison area and the caco cage. Pity there wasn't more of stuff like that. A wonderful tribute map.

The map looks really nice, and challenging gameplay keeps you plenty busy throughout the map. the final boss was a nice touch, though overall the map was way too dark [though that may have been my own fault], and there are a couple of confusing unmapped areas. Overall, great stuff, worth a play. 4 stars

This level is so beautiful it isn't funny! Early on the gameplay turned me off (too hard), but then it picks up the pace, so don't give up, and, well, it kind of a represents a modern cutting edge dooming design. The style is right up my alley, and the cave area? WTF? Is it possible in Doom? And all built in such short time? Impressive. Recommended. -TeH NeXuS

It is an outstanding map, and I actually missed out on its excellence during its August release (it never showed up in the /Newstuff chronicles, and I didn't have GZDoom on my machine until I installed it to play UTNT, because I had no way of thinking this map was good enough to make GZDoom worth installing for). What I had missed out on came to my attention on Dec. 10 when it showed up as a Cacoward on Page 1. Definately one of 2007's top single maps. 5/5

A very long gothic (NOT in gothicdm style, though!) newsk00l map (in both graphics and gameplay). It's a bit linear, but stunningly beautiful and the ambience is awesome. Recommended for everyone who likes gothic maps, newsk00l maps and/or maps with tons of dynamic lightning.

Of the three, the first Cheogsh is really the only one I enjoyed playing. It seems like shadowman took the most annoying gameplay bits from the first one, and made them even worse in the second and third episodes. Also In my first playthrough I didn't have enough ammo to defeat the final boss on Ultra Violence difficulty.

The scene 3/4th's of the way through where you get teleported to someones house could have been emitted: really cheesy. Cheogsh's "Voice" could have used some work... There was quite a few spots in the game where I had to look up a walkthrough. Still, Pretty great! Recommended. ~MitochondrialAdam/A lienEuphoria

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
