About This File

It's a classic, megawad is partially citing the original Doom2, like if it was that same Doom2, but ..would be not the really the same and sometimes totally not the same...

This wad doesn't really resemble most of the author's later output, and the difficulty level is somewhat low. It provides a decent challenge in the middle section, where I died at least once in each of maps 5-8 (UV continuous), but after that it runs out of steam, struggling to pick up momentum and eventually just fizzling out.

this is certainly not the kinds of maps I expected from Eternal. Remain III remains (get it?) a lot better than this, but this still has that classic Doom II feel in its maps. one of his weaker offerings when compared to his other work, but it has its shine.

A superb re-imagining of the first 11 maps. Great gameplay, level design, item placement,..everythi ng. This is Vanilla dooming at it's absolute finest.

Very good re-imagining of the first episode of Doom II. Perhaps even the best; I find it slightly superior to the first 11 maps of Flashback To Hell.

You know what I really like about this is that it looks really good with comparatively little detail. Stands in stark contrast to a lot of the detail-whoring maps we see these days. Love these reimaginings of the levels...MAP10 didn't feel much like the original but it was still fun and certainly evoked a refueling base much more. When you release the next parts, make them harder and they'll be perfect. 4/5

This was so good, I just didn't want it to end. Excellent remakes of Doom 2, with some clever additions and sometimes breathtaking design. This guy knows how to push the limits of the Doom engine! I walked around MAP10 for ages just looking at everything in awe. You're an amazing mapper and deserve every piece of praise you get. I sincerely hope you release Remain 2. 5/5 -jj

nice, takes me back, its a good change of pace as most wads people make now are too complex, i don't think doom was ever meant to be complex. these look better than the original doom 2 maps in my opinion and pose a little more of a challenge too. 5/5

This has some Doom II touches, although this often fades away (e.g. Map04). In general the levels are more spacious, with a squarer, less grungy design than the originals. Gameplay much easier. On its own merits it is entertaining, but feels like a solid ten-year-old Doom I megawad at times. First few levels quick fun; The Crusher is fun, and epic-looking; Dead Simple isn't as good as original; Refuelling Base pretty damn good; O of Destruction weak.

a bit too far away from the original, but really very good interpretation, could need a more modern style, nonetheless it is well done - every doom2 fan should play this, 4/5

Smart rebuilding of original theme. I like these maps. Nut some secrets are hard to find and sometimes it was too bland for me. It is great map set, but unfortunatly not legendary for me. 4/5 - Damned

This could be the best remake I have ever played. The gameplay is nigh perfect, some of the levels were pure bliss to play. The wad isn't very detailed, but manages to look very good anyway, maybe due to good texture choices and lighting. The levels resemble their Doom2 counterparts in theme and some architectural choices, but don't try to imitate them too closely; thus the player gets a fresh and exciting experience. Very well deserved 5 stars.

So bland and boring. Its doing what Doom 2 did: bore me to hell with the gameplay and don't even think about co-op here. Overrated. And looks bad, too, I have no idea why some people think anything here looks amazing. Its really bland.

It is an excellent Doom II style megawad. Interestingly enough, I just downloaded it today (9/14/07) despite its release about 1 1/2 weeks ago. I usually pick up new Doom episodes the day they release, but the facts that (a) this wad was not shown as upcoming anywhere and (b) I've been playing other games such as Qukae, Duke3d, and Call Of Duty for the last month made me not notice that this was released. Anyways, it's excellent, especially the later levels. I hope all 32 levels get done. 5/5

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
