Back to Basics

About This File

After making a large map with slopes, scripts, all new resources and whatnot, I felt like making something very basic.

Also used this opportunity to get some maps that were gathering dust finished and released; a very old episode 2 project (although I have released e2m1 of that project before as e2m1er.wad), and a project for EDGE that got to 1½ levels (Rust). The maps were converted to use vanilla resources only (except for the sky).

E2M5-E2M9 however are brand new levels for this release. The wad is tested to be vanilla compatible, though during mapping it has mainly been tested with ZDoom for convenience's sake. Also found to work with Eternity. But as it is vanilla compatible, any port should work.

Awesome episode. E2M1's theme is kind of all over the place, but overall this is great. 5/5

Great levels! Large and complicated, I amazed such good levels produced using only original DOOM materials. I tried at UV and not too hard, not too easy. Try to conserve ammo at UV, there's barely enough to kill every baddas. My only complaint is... I CANT FIGURE HOW TO GET TO THE SECRET LEVEL!

This is quite good from start to finish and most levels are large and look very good. On UV the gameplay is tough from the word go, and there is limited ammo so you need to have your smarts. You face Cacos and Barons in the first map and the shotgun guys can make your life a real misery here so save often. The architecture itself is excellent, a mixture of brown/base with increasing hellish elements. You'll love this episode indeed. 4.5 Stars -P.C

It's well designed for sure but a bit too much backtracking is involved in some levels - save the more complex levels to last. As well, I think it's a bummer that the doom 2 enemies weren't thrown in because, frankly, the original enemies are far too weak/tedious even if they are tucked in fiendish positions. But the layout, while too complicated for the early maps, is done wonderfully.

Waaaay too tedious, as a previous poster said. Level 2 isn't even beatable. 1/5 stars.

Espi ... this is great. Yes there is some backtracking to perform, but not as too much as in Eternal !!!! Yes it could have been better with an additional set of monsters; it could have been built to satisfy the progressive complexity standard. Don't mind this, it was a start-to-finish enjoyment. The four switches to secret was a "pure délice". This is not linear; you can choose ... and when played in fastmode, check your shotgunned ass ... You are one Alltime Star ~PFL Jan01/2009

It's a really good episode 2 remake and I played it while it was near-release... I'm going to play it again! Next up is your version of episode 3, can't wait to see it! ;) 5/5 -CodenniumRed

A mapping masterclass, I was enthralled from start to finish. No fancy visual nonsense going on, just good clean and economical Doom design with some innovation thrown in for good measure.

Excellent. A bit too much backtracking needed at times, but otherwise, these maps are great.

Really nice! I was skeptical initially since most non-DOOM2 levels tend to be hampered by the lack of monster diversity (not to mention the lack of the SSG), but you really pulled off a very nice one. Definitely recommended.

I genuinely enjoyed this mod with its level design and music. It was challenging and interesting and it kept me playing a while after beating it to try to find anything. though I would say it was slightly repetitive and overwhelming with enemies at some moments.

Writing a review for Darkening 2 is tough. It's a beloved megawad, and for good reason. As many other reviewers have said, it is historically a very important project.   It was an important megawad for me personally. I fell in love with the first level in particular. The music, the realistic architecture, so reminiscent of the video games of the 90s... It all left a lasting impression. And it was one of the most beautiful wads I've seen at the time.   But I rarely played anyt

A competently made map, for sure, but fun? It's way too long and repetitive, with same-y combat & ambush scenarios used again and again, and with way too much enemies, and not that much of a challenge, even for me who isn't exactly fond of "SUPER HARD WAD #9263!!!!11!. You can cut the whole thing in half, and then cut THAT half in half, and it would be a better map. Is it bad? No, just a little bit above average, mostly because it drags a bit too long.

Generally good map design, but the difficulty as is the case with pwads tends to be uneven even on HMP, especially when you mix them with what slaughtermaps tend to be (monster spam). Too many parts where, after pressing a switch, you'll spend some time killing enemies only to realise the map maker tried to get cute and spawned a bunch of hidden archviles somewhere to start reviving everyone while you were busy wasting ammo. This is especially unfun in parts with very little cover where you'll b

I like the part where I pay for the numerous murders I committed by getting beaten up by either a Mancubus or an Arachnotron, it changed my outlook on Monster Priority. Thank you "Problematic" Revenant #7, I have yet to find a way to repay him.
